AI has not made us better, more productive, more successful or grown the economy outside of GPU sales and data center construction. It has also made the price of every single device of every kind more expensive, depressed the housing market, and increased literally everybody’s cost of debt.

Normal food, making a meal: Ok, that's enough I guess Normal food, making extras: I used a ton of ingredients and I have a little too much maybe Soup, making a meal: How did I end up with so much food Soup, making extras: DANGER - DO NOT ATTEMPT

It's a board game but the pieces are pork scraps mixed with cornmeal, flour, and spices, and pretty common in Pennsylvania and surrounding states.

Weird Al at a small local venue in like 1995 (parents thought I was too young to go to a show at a bar) Primus and NIN around the same era (I became a fan of both like six months too late) Daft Punk Alive tour (visiting my long distance girlfriend)

How about this? Best concerts that you ALMOST got to see but DIDN’T. Include reasons if you like: Rolling Stones (play rehearsal) Johnny Cash (I dallied) R.E.M. (play performance) Nirvana (canceled, college declined to pay requested $500 appearance fee)

If a soccer player had a large enough jaw that they could carry the ball between their teeth, would that violate any rule?

What's the point of going to the moon if you still can't escape Microsoft Outlook?

Sorry I'm not more open-minded about LLMs, it's just some fucking maniacs shoveled out a bunch of useless bloatware featuring that technology, did not give me any chance to opt out, reorganized the entire economy around it, zeroed out gains made by green energy, and made it impossible to buy RAM

Spotify Wrapped season really reveals which of your friends give money to a company that has given J*e R*gan a third of a billion dollars and advertised for ICE

Today was my 365th @nytimes.com crossword puzzle in a row. This streak began when last year's tech strike ended. I will not be doing the crossword tomorrow, and I will allow my subscription to lapse when it expires.

Did the New York Times ruin journalism?

There's a thin layer of iridium-rich rock covering almost the entire world called the K-Pg Boundary. It was the first clue that led scientists to propose and then prove that a meteor killed the dinosaurs. If we're extremely lucky, that's what the 2020s AI slop era will be reduced to someday.

Neighbors I barely know invited me to go to a park with them. I politely declined. As they drove away they said "we're on the hunt for a pirate transmitter" and my heart is broken

To the cyclist who passed me on the Longfellow and then again by BCEC and yelled "I need to study your route": I took Charles, then cut through the Common to Park St station, down Winter and Summer to Dewey Plaza. Maybe you avoided Downtown Crossing? Not worth it.

When I play an RPG I always save my healing potions for later, and no boss ever feels like the right time to use them. This time it isn't a game but the Senate Democrats are still saving their best tools for a perfect moment that'll never come.

These are the same Senate Democrats who lectured the base for years about the importance of preserving the filibuster so it would still be available when Democrats were in the minority

On this Pi Day, I want everyone to remember that the stupidest thing Carl Sagan ever wrote was at the very end of the novel Contact, where Ellie found a pattern in the base-11 representation of pi. 🧵

"The universe was made on purpose, the circle said. In whatever galaxy you happen to find yourself, you take the circumference of a circle, divide it by its diameter, measure closely enough, and uncover a miracle--another circle, drawn kilometers downstream of the decimal point."

Even Carl must have known that pi is almost certainly "normal" -- i.e. that all sequences of digits are equally likely to appear. On the other hand, the creators of the universe chose to put a really crazy number of 69s in pi. In this essay, I will

I spent a chunk of my early adulthood being ashamed of my reading habits and trying to read more "respectable" books. It really just made me less excited to read. I'm trying to raise my kids to love what they love.

Tolkien's costliest mistake in Lord of the Rings is almost certainly not using the IPA in Appendix E

I always imagined that an "8 ball" was a quantity of drugs the size and shape of a billiard ball and I refuse to learn otherwise

The New York Times has many bigger problems, but that doesn't change the fact that this sidebar sucks
