Loving this thread. Progress is quieter than the reactions it provokes. But that isn't the same as defeat.

Two great things on tomorrow in Inverness. The Canny Linquist will be joining Blot’s open mic at the Victorian Market, then she will be bolting off to the Botanic Gardens.

The lifeboat volunteers I knew were the funniest, most relentless adults in my life as a kid. The job is an unimaginable combination of comedic tedium and abject, relentless terror. To do it at all is stunning. To volunteer to do it is incredible.

The RNLI is the closest you will ever get to actual Batman. When rescue is visibly, viscerally, obviously impossible; when the water is a smothering, thundering black wall and the wind is screaming straight from Hell; when you are absolutely going to die: someone’s hand pulls you out and you don’t.

Coastal NE Scotland here, and had family in Orkney. Friends worked at sea, some on the rigs. Spent a bit of time on boats and ferries myself. The sea is beautiful, and terrifying. The RNLI will try to save you, no matter the conditions, or who you are. Ordinary, yet extraordinary people.

Oh no! I love Category Is. Got some great books and stickers from there - would also love to see them meet their goal

Amal El-Mohtar@amalelmohtar.com

Just learned that Category Is Books, a lovely queer bookshop in Glasgow, has been targeted by transphobic violence, & is fundraising to cover the costs of a smashed window & roller shutters. I hate that they have to do this & would love to see them meet their goal.

The spot at the head of our Welsh nationalist table is rightly reserved for peace. But there is also an important place set, whether the diplomats think it helpful or not, for righteous indignation. Because if not all Saes are bad, not all Saes are good either ✍️ Molly Stubbs

“We need to stop talking about a majority in the same terms as a Westminster majority''. Had we adopted the same voting system as Westminster we would have ended up with -60 SNP -4 tories -4 Lib Dem's -2 labour -2 greens. Crunch those numbers, Then tell me we have no mandate for an Indyref.

Last year, I posted about an incredible event in 2023: a megatsunami in Greenland triggering an initially baffling 9-day seismic pulse across the whole planet & a terrific piece of collaborative international scientific detective-work. Now there's a sequel. And holy hell, it's even BIGGER. 1/

OK, this is wild. In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them. It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*. What the HELL? 1/

This short thread is perfect.

Recently we had a history event at the church, and lots of visitors came by, and I was explaining to one of them that the guys helping out with refreshments were from Iran and so might hold out their phones for her to speak into to get it translated and help them understand what she was saying.
