Everybody wants specialist information, but nobody wants to pay for it All the work is in specialized analysis of really fine details, all the money's in general agglomeration of other people's work

Euan Healey@euanhealey.bsky.social

I really think that the move from specialist journalism to generalist journalism is an underrated upstream cause of a lot of our news environment, discourse and politics problems. Death of local news is real too but the death of specialist news has created a neglect at the heart of our media.

Made this thread with excerpts from this very partisan take because I do think the Yemeni republican line gets lost in Western discourse dominated by Houthi agitprop There's a lot of history underlining the Yemen conflict. The Imamate. Revolution. The Southern Issue. It's important to know it.

The Saudi-Houthi conflict only seems to draw attention because of its implications for Iran and the United States, but it is a disaster for so many Yemenis. @apnews.com’s Fatma Khaled on the tens of thousands now fleeing the Houthi offensive: apnews.com/article/yeme...

Among the degrees that have been cut at Edinburgh are Persian Studies (and Persian and Middle Eastern Studies), and Africa and International Development. If only there was any need for specialists in any of these areas in the current state of affairs.

Obair le déanamh agam ar bhlas mó chainte: bhí mé i nDeilginis leis an tachrán ag ithe uachtair reoite agus d'fhiafraigh fear a bhí ina shuí taobh linn 'If you don't mind me asking what language are you speaking? Is it Danish?'

Fadhbanna leis an chódaistriú inniu: An tachrán: Dhaidí I want to play ball! Mise: Tá muid ar tí ár ndinnéar a ithe. An tachrán: DON'T WANT THE DINNER Mise: ... gabh mo leithscéal, an lón An tachrán: DON'T WANT THE TIGER

Caithfidh mé admháil gur lig mé de Ulysses mar san eagrán a fuair mo mham bhí a oiread fo-nótaí ann is a bhí téacs, is chonacthas dom nárbh fhiú tabhairt faoi má ba ghá nótaí chomh fada leis an úrscéal féin a léamh lena thuigbheáil.

a take i have on why there is a gap between people who read and enjoyed ulysses and those who started it and can't fathom anyone liking it is because it only gets good after the first block of chapters, when the perspective switches to Leopold

"In 2012, a government inquiry in Australia found that Indigenous languages played such an important role in communities’ health and life expectancy that it argued they should be recognised in the constitution. Some 14 years later, the constitution still only recognises English."

Sophia Smith Galer’s piece here on endangered languages is well worth a read. Nearly half of all languages are likely soon to be gobbled up by the 20 ‘big’ ones that 88% of all humans speak - English, Mandarin, Hindi etc #langsky

Chonaic mé coiníní cúpla lá ó shin sa pháirc taobh thiar den eastát is inniu thug mé an tachrán síos lena bhfeiceáil agus dúirt sé 'wow' rud nach ndeireann mórán agus d'fhan píosa maith ag féachaint is ansin ar aghaidh linn agus tháinig cúpla leaid agus cúnna leo agus isteach leo sa pháirc chéanna 😕
