It's a special thrill to get to discuss your own work in a setting like this with a writer you really admire. Thanks to @sathnam.bsky.social, and to all who came out.

Thanks to everyone who came to this in London. I was reminded of an important lesson by @praddenkeefe.bsky.social: the answer to everything in writing is hard work. Maddeningly.

Munich! This is tonight.

In London Falling, Patrick Radden Keefe “comes about as close as possible to resolving” the problems of the true crime genre. “For all its formal satisfactions [the book] is scrupulously humane.” —@mrkocnnll.bsky.social

nybooks.comLondon’s Brutal Underground | Mark O’ConnellIn Patrick Radden Keefe’s London Falling, an ordinary boy’s deadly obsession with the ultrarich reveals deeper corruption at the heart of modern London.

Some writers don't read the reviews (or claim they don't, anyway). I read 'em. And it is a strange and wonderful feeling when an astute critic is able to grasp so clearly (and articulate so elegantly) the specific thing that you set out to do.

Today in sentences I would rather have liked to write myself: "The book portrays the city as a liminal metropolis where the line demarcating business and crime has been worn faint by heavy footfall from both directions."

I'm honestly tempted to screenshot the whole thing but, uh, I believe people should subscribe to magazines, so will refrain. But a few characteristically nuanced reflections from Mark (who has grappled with these issues in his own terrific A THREAD OF VIOLENCE):

Just finished reading @praddenkeefe.bsky.social’s WILD New Yorker article about a group of people in New Orleans who staged *dozens* of car-into-18-wheeler accidents for money. They were real collisions. Gonna be thinking about this one for a while. www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...

For @praddenkeefe.bsky.social, one of the best writers on corruption, the current moment provides an extraordinary bounty. Here, he focuses on a glut of car accidents involving big rigs around New Orleans. Guest editor Kit Chellel's top pick: www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...

Gobsmacked. Thanks to the incredible team at @doubledaybooks.bsky.social, to booksellers (who are, no joke, keeping literacy alive) and to everyone who has read the book already or has it on reserve at the library or just thinks they might check it out eventually when they get around to it. 🙏🙏🙏

This is the craziest shit I have read in a loooooong time.

In the New Yorker this week, a story I've been trying to get off the ground for 5 years... about a Hollywood stuntwoman-turned-personal-injury-lawyer, her ex-con fiancee, high-speed crashes with 18-wheelers, and economic desperation in 21st century America. It's set in New Orleans and it's a doozy.
