In the 1962 Twilight Zone episode I Sing the Body Electric, a widowed father gets a robot grandmother to help care for his children. Skeptical and resentful at first, the oldest daughter is convinced when she realizes that not only does the robot truly love her,

cool, cool

The problems are the same or at least similar everywhere and yet all the diagnoses are local. Clearly it serves a political purpose but there are very few correctives. A real failure to think globally

France's Marine Le Pen: “Nobody thinks we are stronger today than yesterday, or that after 10 years of Emmanuel Macron we are walking on a field of rose petals. “Today the words that come to mind are ruin, decline, erasure, riots and even chaos, decay, disappearance.

Finally watched La Haine last night and it’s of course relevant for thinking about what’s happening in France and other parts of Europe, the violence of the police towards a multiracial and multiethnic youth in communities bereft of opportunities. But it’s also such an unmistakably 1990s movie

The call for imagination has been the response from countless western left thinkers since the failure of the Soviet project (whichever way you date that)

A+ spite-project

Three years ago, my dad said that all fish are the same shape. Out of spite, I decided to draw all 478 families of bony fish listed in Nelson 2016. There's still some stuff I need to edit and some fish I want to redraw but, after 985 days, I finished my big dumb fish project last night.

New Past Lives: I talked with the fantastic Kyle Harper about his new book, "The Last Animal," and whether what we're living through right now is Earth's sixth mass extinction or something different and unprecedented. He's one of the most interesting scholars working today! pod.link/1852618120/e...

Reading this makes me feel insane. There’s no ambitious action coming. Liberal capitalist society cannot prevent much greater harm. What is the evidence it can?

The 2026 UNEP Emissions Gap Report is out: The Point of Return. 🌍🌡️🔥 It's sobering but actionable. Decades of inadequate climate action have closed off opportunities to limit warming, but ambitious action today can still prevent much greater harm. A thread of some of the highlights 🧵

This same exact thing has been posted over and over for decades. Even Kim Stanley Robinson was probably overly optimistic when he imagined that we would end our intransigence in the wake of a big enough disaster.

I’m really incurably looking for potential silver linings and i think it is possible that AI’s overly smooth blandness helps more people understand the point of experimental and chaotic prose forms

Trump brought more destruction to DC this weekend, ordering the cutting of 400 mature trees before courts could stop it. Same tactic as when he knocked down the East Wing. Riverbend Landscapes & Tree Service of VA did the cutting. They knew it was wrong. And you can let them know how you feel. 1/

Has anyone watched this? I’m so curious how others have thought about this film in recent times

Gaucho Marx@primarymediation.bsky.social

Watched Alain Resnais Hiroshima Mon Amour last night and I'm still quite stunned. I'm not sure I can separate my read of the film from the present resurgence of fascism in Europe and the US. letterboxd.com/film/hiroshi...
