Using mouse intestinal regeneration + organoids, we find a critical intermediate tissue density acts as a regenerative timer: only in this window does heterogeneity in the mechanosensor YAP1 emerge, encoding lineage-biased competence at the chromatin level.

FOXA1 reads out the YAP1 state and couples it to Delta–Notch feedback, generating fate bistability. That bistability stores a memory of transient YAP1 activity — converting fleeting heterogeneity into stable, self-organized tissue architecture. 🧬

After injury, intestinal cells lose their identity and the tissue has to rebuild its pattern from scratch. Classic theory assumes a "blank slate" of identical cells — but real cells are heterogeneous from the start.

Emergence and Self-organisation across biological scales! I hope you are ready for next year conference! It will be an incredible event April 20-22 2026. The first of many #LakeConference organised by @ehannezo.bsky.social @alleninstitute.org and James Sharpe @embl.org

When tissue density hits a critical level, YAP1 activity becomes heterogeneously inactivated. This cell-to-cell variability is essential for triggering the first cell fate decisions via chromatic remodelling and Delta-Notch signalling.

Do you want to know how tissue is coordinated across space and time? Don’t miss Laura’s talk!

lauracapolupo.bsky.social@lauracapolupo.bsky.social

If you are attending #CellBio2024 and are interested in understanding how the process of crypt morphogenesis is coordinated both in vivo and in organoids then come to my talk Wed Dec 18th in the subgroup “Organoids as tools to study the function of tissue in Health and Disease”

My first post here to celebrate the lab and their achievements. What a fantastic night!

FMI science@fmiscience.bsky.social

In recognition of her groundbreaking research at the FMI, our very own @priscaliberali.bsky.social was awarded the Basel City Science Prize last night by Lukas Engelberger, Conradin Cramer, Mustafa Atici with FMI Director Dirk Schübeler and group leader Margherita Turco in attendance! bit.ly/3ZbiPnB
