Watching (mostly American) people going starry-eyed about how All Be Fine once BN is out and...just sigh, it's going to be months more of "back to first principles, *genocide* bad, not just one man" while they argue "but they voted out N, you're still complaining, this is antisemitism", isn't it. 🫩

yeah yeah yeah but Zionism is not racism

Joe Noonan@joenoonan.bsky.social

UN report: "The Israeli authorities and forces have committed the crimes against humanity of extermination, torture, rape and other forms of sexual violence in the West Bank, as well as persecution based on intersecting discriminatory grounds, with nationality, race and ethnicity at its core."

The news from Brazil and Serbia are great and show that you don't defeat the far right by copying it or trying to appeal to their supporters You do it by being uncompromising, showing the danger they pose and offering something different to the many crises people suffer from

These companies are sociopathic. They are showing us who they are. Believe them.

Maybe its the peculiarities of my own feed but I'm really struck by the fact that Palestine figures very centrally on my X feed, but there is almost no discussion here and it certainly doesn't figure in 'Trending' topics. Bluesky does feel quite genteel & academic, maybe that's fine in its way.

Short thread on Jason Arday & Cambridge: where things are: (1/n) about ten days ago, 45 senior staff sent a letter to the Chancellor, reminding the University that a thorough review had been promised, and was nowhere in sight. The Afzal review was on one specific matter alone

View full thread

And now the inevitable has happened. Bad actors, operating under the anti-DEI/Free Speech/Meritocracy banner have announced their own review. It's staffed by the usual suspects, right-wing, transphobic, racist & worse.

This means we can expect another pile-on of the tedious "DEI is Killing Western Civilisation" variety in a few months. The University could have chosen to head this off at the pass. But it hasn't. Why? Because accountability is not in the offing. Just ignore, it will go away.

Here is the Guardian's coverage of the letter which cites it. It was very clear that the promised second review was too vague and too broad, contradicting earlier promises, & that accountability was key. www.theguardian.com/education/20...

theguardian.comSenior academics set out key questions Cambridge must answer over Jason Arday’s deathLetter from more than 40 signatories says university has backed away from promised thorough review of events before death

The organisers have not yet made the letter publicly available, so I can't share it here, but it's not secret or anything. Anyway, over 10 days on, there has been NO ACKNOWLEDGEMENT from either Chancellor or University Council that letter was sent. Ignoring is now default mode

Let me make this easy. No nation-state, including my own natal land, has the right to exist based on religious or racial requirements for belonging, by dispossessing or excluding others, or having different classes of citizenship.

Two staters: can I just clarify that the sovereign State of Palestine will be allowed a standing army and arsenal just like its separate but equal nation state, as well as all other infrastructure sovereign nation-states can have? ~The two states will be subjected to the same non-racist conditions?

EITHER we work against a repeat of the Holocaust OR name Nazism as the racist ideology driving it.

George Monbiot@georgemonbiot.bsky.social

Let me try this once more. It was a choice. EITHER the Greens adopted a slogan. OR they could have joined the next govt, where they could push for an end to arms sales, sanctions, support for the arrest warrants etc. It was never going to be both. Which one makes a material difference? #GazaGenocide

Zionism is not racist

Mark Chadbourn@chadbourn.bsky.social

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich: “The thorough cleansing that we are carrying out now in southern Lebanon is unprecedented. “They have nowhere to return to. Look at how it looks. “And by the way, the world isn’t stopping us.”

One great service done by yesterday's fracas is that many on Bluesky with Zionist sympathies have dropped their Sweet Little White Gal/Guy routine and the fangs have been bared. I like it.

The BBC is determined to ask every supporter of Zionism if Zionism is racism. Unfortunately it can't ask the victims of Zionism because they were all killed by Israel.

Yep, there are lot of people exposing themselves as supporters of a racist ideology engaged in both apartheid and genocide right now I'm blocking each and every one of them

You know, I am quite ambivalent about bsky because it's quite genteel and unbothered in the main. I have seen FAR MORE OUTRAGE about the Greens motion over the last two hours than posts about Palestine over the last two years.

Born into an entity that also self-determined in 1947, I can say with absolute conviction: self-determination is not a free pass, nor a pathway to permanent victimhood. At some point, you become an agent, perhaps at the very moment you resist.

Those of us born into and raised in postcolonial 'self-determined' entities understand in a way that perhaps those in white ex-coloniser nations don't: the self-determined nation state is NOT exempt from fundamental criticism or vigilance. It must always be held to account.

This does mean self-education, a non-terminal process. I had very little understanding of the caste nature of the Republic of India or of Kashmir, because that is not what my education there gave me.
