Many well-known companies that still operate today, such as the engineering company Siemens, the designer Hugo Boss and the pharmaceutical company Bayer, used forced and slave labour during the Nazi era... 📸 I.G. Farben factory at Auschwitz Birkenau, 1941.

The daily "Dick Tracy" strip began on October 12, 1931. (Chester Gould’s strip had made its overall debut as a Sunday-only strip earlier in the same month and had appeared on October 4 and 11.) Here are the first four dailies:

Subverting democracy isn't new to John Roberts, Brett Kavanaugh, or Amy Coney Barrett. All three were on George W. Bush's "Florida Recount Team," which lay the groundwork for stopping vote counting in Florida—and Bush v. Gore, the politically-motivated SCOTUS decision that gave Bush the election.

First, the famed Rosie the Riveter image that is a feminist icon is in fact an anti-union image created by Westinghouse during the war. All discussions of memories of women and the war should start with knowing this fact. thesocietypages.org/socimages/20...

Just saw a narcissistic, womanizing president and his clueless advisers mired in a war based on nothing more than his ego. Also: I watched Leo McCarey's DUCK SOUP (1933) w/ the Marx Bros tonight. It’s like writers Bert Kalmar, Harry Ruby, Arthur Sheekman and Nat Perrin had a crystal ball. #FilmSky

If you want to understand how the American Catholic Church was co-opted by right-wing politics and wealthy donors. Read two books. 👇 Read The Neo-Catholics first. This was written before Trump even ran. Then read Playing God. You’ll understand the connections.

Xitter's algorithm is the social media equivalent of force-feeding geese for pâté, fattening up fascist ranks.

The Author, Séamas O'Reilly@seamas.bsky.social

Have seen this Nature piece about the effects of X's algorithm mentioned again and it bears repeating; exposure to a right wing algorithm makes you - measurably and predictably - more right wing, even after you stop using it. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Paid by the day to rummage through a bankrupt light-industrial facility on the Near West Side and find anything that could be sold to a reclamation yard before the structures got demo'd

Noticing that so many stories of "nice communities" disrupted by massive AI data centers seem to be about white people. Wonder how many of them have been quick to dismiss research and activism about environmental racism since the 1980s, considering that field largely centered on people of color?

1/ In March 2025, shortly after his return to power, Donald Trump’s administration postponed the compliance deadline for the FDA’s Food Traceability Rule by 30 months. That moved it back from January 20, 2026, to July 20, 2028. We are now paying the price.

The MAGA regime’s 50% trade war tariffs against Canada officially took effect in the middle of the morning. Canada’s Prime Minister says they will match those tariffs dollar by dollar. I’m an American and I fully support our Canadian neighbors against this fascist criminal syndicate. 🇨🇦

There are going to be Democrats who say we shouldn’t rip it all out — it’s already built, we have other priorities — but removing the visible signs of Trumpism is absolutely necessary.

The vandalism and desecration of the White House isn't just vanity and it's not trivial. It's caesarism, as in literally what Julius Caesar did to the symbolic architecture of civic republicanism. Our national iconography matters and allowing the disfiguring of it to persist is a substantive harm.

🧵You can't talk about Natalie Harp w/o talking about how strange she is. This isn't making fun of physique or bearing. It's about obsessive/creepy behavior. And it matters on policy. As a former Republican media consultant, I can tell you that this attack is astonishingly effective w/the public...

"Our national debt continues to pose an existential threat to the future of our nation," says House Budget Chair Jodey Arrington, who has led GOP-only bills that increase the national debt by $3.4 trillion (OBBB), $72 billion (ICE/CBP) and $95 billion (Recon 3, in progress).

The U.S. national debt just hit $40 trillion, according to the Treasury Department.

Tales of everyday corruption. Pete Hegseth cancelled the $400,000 contract for making uniforms for the Blue Angels on the grounds that the contract with "The Sewing Box" was DEI since the firm is Black-owned. Instead, he awarded it to a Trump donor for $1,690,000, a 325% price increase!
