And a way of looking at familiar things in a novel way

Matthew Stewart@roguestrands.bsky.social

What do I enjoy as a reader and editor? And aim for as a poet? - a sense of line and its inherent tensions. - a concise, precise and fresh use of language. - a naturally heightened cadence. - a delving into the universal via the specific. - an emotional awareness of the reader’s role. Not much! 🤪

Jojo is great, Emma may grow into the role Josh is wrong for this job

Frances Ryan@francesryan.bsky.social

I want an interrogation with the Strictly producers. Viewers loved Claudia’s comedy after the dances so they’ve given us…JoJo’s empathy. They hired a comedian in Josh so they’ve put him with…Tess’s autocue. Have these people ever seen television before?!

Heaven help us in Newcastle

Reform UK Councillor Mick Mahoney, representing Kenton on Newcastle Council. Who are ‘they’, Mick? What’s more, we also have Councillor Michael Vincent Fitzpatrick, also of Newcastle City Council liking it.

Come again in the spring

@suebecks@suebecks.bsky.social

I have yet to see a puffin in real life but through you and @kaysambell.bsky.social have fallen for these gorgeous creatures Sadly on our summer holiday to Northumberland late August it was too late to see them on the Farne Islands.

Well, as you know, Sue, I am very fond of a puffin. Puffins live mostly out of sight, but when they are visible, they don’t do very much and just sit making burbling noises. that is a state I aspire to rather than being busy all the time.

@suebecks@suebecks.bsky.social

Next UK banknotes to feature barn owls, bumblebees, PUFFINS and hedgehogs @profsallybrown.bsky.social kaysambell.bsky.social www.theguardian.com/business/202...

Good luck with this: I have a relative who has successfully been fed this way for close to 15 years!

Yesterday, I met the home parenteral support nurse. She will train me to administer IV feeding to myself, w/ support from my wife, at home. We begin training proper today! Meanwhile, medics continue to try to bring my weight up w/ feed.

Oh, I do love the little ALCS payment every year

Matthew Stewart@roguestrands.bsky.social

Important if you've published anything (poetry or prose) in a U.K.-based print journal or mag with an ISSN in the past three years! The deadline to add it to your ALCS account is 31/10 this year. And if you haven't joined yet, do so for free. Get paid for your writing...! www.alcs.co.uk/join-alcs/

Go to the garden centre and buy some bulbs that you can plant for Christmas

Dr Heidi Colthup@heidi-colthup.bsky.social

I've dropped my elderly uncle off at his eye clinic where he'll be for about an hour. I can now wait in the car or get a coffee in the next door garden centre which appears to be filling up with zombies.

Can I get a random mixed pack of 10 different cards for £20?

Gail Myerscough@gailmyerscough.co.uk

Mix-and-match card offer. Pick 5 for £12 or pick 10 for £20 (that's a tenner off buying individually). The whole range is included. www.gailmyerscough.co.uk/greeting-cards

Most U.K.-based poets and publishers have failed to understand how Bluesky works, and have absurdly turned their backs on all the terrific readers here...

Tom Cox@dj-acid-reflux.bsky.social

The publishing industry views Bluesky as some tiny unimportant island out somewhere in a far-off ocean. It's not worthy of their attention like Amazon Algoland or The Republic Of Instagram Influencer Collaborativepost is. What they don't realise is just how much the island's inhabitants love books.

I love my copy

Matthew Stewart@roguestrands.bsky.social

A new batch of books has now reached me and they're all itching to find a reader, clamouring for me to slip them into an envelope and post them off, ready to be devoured. Would you like to lend them a helping hand?! 😜 If so, just drop me a DM and I'll sort out your signed copy for you...

Matt Haig, the midnight library and lyse Doucet the finest hotel in kabul are the best books I’ve read lately

Kate Elliott@kateelliottsff.bsky.social

I am not first and will be far from the last to say this: I have purchased so many books because I saw them recommended or publicized here on bsky. I cannot urge you all enough to KEEP TALKING ABOUT BOOKS. I know it's easier to talk up someone else's book, but this also means you, the shy author.

If you haven’t seen any of Jim‘s work, you really should pop in, especially if you are just up in the region for the great North run. I love his work and have several of his prints on my wall; there are several prints featuring the run so why not buy one to celebrate the occasion

Jim Edwards @jimedwardsart.bsky.social

My Studio is open today, even though I’m normally closed on a Sunday. To make up for last couple of days I’ve been away, & I do need to catch up on a couple of commissions. If you want to pop in, I’ll be open 10am-4pm. Jim Edwards Studio, 57 Lime St, Ouseburn, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 2PQ.

Well, it’s good, but it reminds me so much of the time when I had to ring and tell both my sisters that my mother had died I think when poetry opens the heart it can only be a good thing

Matthew Stewart@roguestrands.bsky.social

Don't know whether that's good or bad, Sally...!

I just love this poem

My news is that I have been promoted to full professor at The Open University. I will take up the title of 'Professor of Critical Educational Technology' in reflection of my disciplinary trajectory and distinctive approach to research. Grateful to all those who helped on the journey!

And I got all four of the connections and knew why! Quite often I get all the connections, but never understand the last one because it’s some Americanism! Must be about to be a lucky day

I absolutely love Utrecht

Alison Stenning@alisonstenning.bsky.social

Spent the evening in largely car-free Utrecht and sad to see the devastating impact the exclusion of cars has had on the bars, cafes and restaurants, and the liveliness of the city centre.
