A party wins 40% of the vote. They deserve: A) all of the power B) none of the power C) a 40% share of the power If they get 60%, they deserve: A) all of the power B) none of the power C) a 60% share of the power Did you pick C? Then you support #ProportionalRepresentation.

#ProportionalRepresentation systems "demonstrably produce more accurate, fair, and representative results."

At the end of the day, #ProportionalRepresentation performs quite well. If you want things done fast, go with a one-party system (e.g., China, or even the US right now). If you want things done according to how the people actually want them done, go with a multi-party system.

Genuine question for my fellow Californians: if the same party ran everything for 60 years and we still rank 38th in education and have the worst housing shortage in the country... at what point do we ask if the system itself is broken? California needs #ProportionalRepresentation.

#ProportionalRepresentation would fix more things beyond gerrymandering and polarization.

Proportional Representation can help make our democracy more resilient and limit the influence of dodgy donors. That's another reason to join the movement for fair votes.

California is the world's 4th largest economy — and one party has controlled it for 60 of the last 65 years. That's not a healthy democracy, that's a monopoly on power. It's high time to break the monopoly, unfuck the system, and make #ProportionalRepresentation a reality.

Same for US and California voters, really. #ProportionalRepresentation #EndTheDuopooly

The thing about proportional representation is that it allows you to vote FOR something – as opposed to first-past-the-post where you often find yourself voting AGAINST something. That's a huge difference, and something most English voters have never experienced.

We agree 100% Although technically, we also think that #ProportionalRepresentation can't happen soon enough and so would prefer it in the shorter run to improve our outlook of the longer run.

Rachael Koev@rachaelkoev.bsky.social

In the longer run, I think we need proportional representation to start moving away from our rigid two-party system. Personally, I'd like our politics to not be dominated by two behemoths.

We see this right now, both in the US by Republicans and in California by Democrats. Two-party systems result in one-party domination too often, destroying all checks and balances. Multi-party competition just works better. #ProportionalRepresentation #EndTheDuopoly #FairSeats #EndPolarization

Under first-past-the-post, governments can easily steamroll communities in safe opposition ridings without electoral backlash. Proportional representation changes this. Every vote impacts seat totals, requiring governments to care about all communities, not just swing seats.

“We need a more proportional Congress. We would have, I think, more new – sometimes young and fresh – candidates. ‘Return to normal,’ in my view, won’t work.” @petebuttigieg.bsky.social shares why we need proportional representation in an interview with @politico.com. #ProportionalRepresentation ⬇️

We really do need #ProportionalRepresentation, and it can all start with California!

What the USA really needs is a proper multi party Proportional Representation voting system. Spoilers and gerrymandering shouldn't be and don't need to be a thing.

And if we do our job right, many Americans will learn about #ProportionalRepresentation after they see California implement it for the state legislature. And then everyone can see for themselves how it is fairer and more functional and why most democracies chose it.

The fix is proportional representation: a party's share of seats matches its share of votes. A party that wins 40 percent of the vote wins about 40 percent of the seats, so gerrymandered maps stop working. Our report, When Maps Don't Matter, shows how it would work. protectdemocracy.org/maps

protectdemocracy.orgWhen maps don't determine electoral outcomesUnder proportional representation, gerrymandering is prohibitively difficult. The system would end the redistricting wars for good.

Under gerrymandering, candidates get to pick their voters to make sure their seats are safe. #ProportionalRepresentation lets *you* pick your representative.

I've spent my career fighting gerrymandering through litigation, advocacy, and public education. I even lost huge in the Supreme Court. After Callais, I'm convinced the tools are nearly gone. The problem is structural. My case for proportional representation, in @GlobeOpinion: protdem.org/45XQYuL

Max Berger@maxberger.bsky.social

The future of the Democratic Party is proportional representation. The left and centrists should have their own parties which win representation in Congress that’s equivalent to their support in the public. We deserve a better system that enables more parties—and people—to win representation.
