Once again. Just like the Paramount Merger Gavin Newsom does what he always does. Sells out the working class people for the billionaires again and again. Not only that but endorses a bill that will make it impossible to tax the wealthy at all. www.commondreams.org/news/newsom-...

commondreams.orgNewsom Endorses Ballot Measure That Would Cancel Out Billionaire Tax—and Ban Future Wealth Taxes | Common Dreams"He’d rather millions of children and families lose their healthcare than ask a couple hundred billionaires to finally pay their fair share."

Harris would not be my first or second or probably even third choice. But I hope she runs just to choke off the cursed @gavinnewsom.bsky.social campaign. She is a far better candidate than him in every way. That guy fucking sucks.

Newsom rejecting the billionaire wealth tax is one thing. Supporting the billionaires' poison pill alternative which would ban taxes on assets permanently, end any chance to fix stepped-up basis, & could be used by an enterprising lawyer to invalidate vehicle fee or other tax changes is another.

I died in the shipwreck of a whaling vessel in 1798, but a few days later, clinging to an old rum barrel. Now I can only haunt this one specific patch of desolate ocean. I thought I saw a cruise liner once, in the distance. Had a scare ready to go and everything. Not much going on outside of that

Fuck. #blooddiesel ?

Olga Lautman 🇺🇦@olgalautman.bsky.social

This is so sick. So a Russian blood diesel vessel is on its way to NC set to arrive tomorrow. It left St Petersburg on Sept 22nd. This Trump-Putin plan has been in the works for weeks can’t picture what allies America will have left after this

Students made their first minicomics in my intro making course - mostly standard format but this student, a first time maker(!), did something so off the charts I’m still reeling from it! & he made like 12 of them for his classmates! A paper engineering feat of flipbookery as well as killer drawing!

This poll from Cook is bonkers. A *huge* plurality of voters (43% overall, 61% of Ds) want Dems to focus on changing the political system overall vs. just opposing (21%, 36% of Ds) or working with Trump (35%, 3% of Ds).

Hot take: Some soccer fan billionaire eating a few million dollars a year to support local soccer coverage across America would have a much bigger impact on the future of the sport than subsidizing the salary of a fancy USMNT manager

Here's David Ellison's statement on his successful Paramount-WBD. Thanks Newsom "for his support throughout this process." State AGs were on track to kill the the merger with litigation and delay. Is Newsom giving up on the presidency and instead pursuing a post-gov career as Friend of Oligarchs?

Next week, League of California Cities will vote on a reactionary resolution put forward by a few cities to support development of a constitutional amendment to overturn much of the state legislature's authority on housing. El Cerrito City Council unanimously voted to oppose. 🧵

The next reconstruction: - Expand the House to 700 Seats - Use MMP to create a multi-party system with PR - Use RCV for US Senate elections - End the filibuster + add DC - Limit the power of the Supreme Court - Expand the court to 13 Justices - Term limits and ethics rules for the court

Alan Elrod@aselrod.bsky.social

House expansion is crucial. There should be at least 700 House seats.

Jim Boren nails it here. I worked with C.K. & Jim McClatchy for 2 decades on the editorial board. They put the public interest & journalism ahead of money. These Chatham guys are barbarians with the nerve to beg for donations while screwing their communities & workers. gvwire.com/2026/09/12/m...

Fucking Sacramento. Guy this morning behind me on his loud ass Harley, in the bicycle lane, so he could get around traffic. I stopped and asked wtf and he told me get out of the way. I refused to move and told him to get the fuck out of the bike land and he said "you should be a better person." No.

If we nominate Newsom we will get destroyed and we will deserve it.

Newsom in North Carolina: "We're dealing with an invasive species in the White House. It's something we're never experienced before -- someone who said he was gonna make us wealthier and healthier, and we're sicker now and poorer in every category."

We have our own version of the AfD. Thanks to our election system, they control the entire federal government, they're kidnapping people and putting them in concentration camps, sending armies into opposition-controlled cities and shooting people in the streets.

The German state election yesterday is a perfect demonstration of why Proportional Representation (PR) is far superior for democracy than First Past the Post (FPTP). TLDR: Thanks to Proportionality, the AfD only won a minority, not majority parliament […] [Original post on mstdn.chrisalemany.ca]

Look, did Gavin Newsom do anything of note nor lead meaningful change in any of California's biggest problem areas in eight years as governor? No. But is going to be the Democratic Party's nominee for president in 2028? Also no.

Ned Resnikoff@resnikoff.bsky.social

Newsom left for South Carolina immediately following the regular session to hype up his presidential campaign lol

While Newsom talks a good talk on addressing climate change, he’s been committing climate arson by defunding transit, biking, and walking programs for years. @damientypes.bsky.social does an excellent job here summarizing how our Governor has prioritized highways over transit again and again.

Gavin Newsom has a national reputation as a Climate Champion. But his record on funding alternatives to driving tells a different story, culminating in leaving major cuts on the table for his successor. cal.streetsblog.org/2026/08/31/s...

In Sacramento, this rumored bike ban would apply to most of the city's most important bike routes — including brand-new protected bike lanes and complete streets projects on 9th, 10th, 12th, 19th, 21st, I, J, P, and Q streets, as well as Franklin Blvd and Broadway

This was so good until the nonsense about "base hits" like RCV and open primaries. Those have their place. They are not steps toward proportional representation. Don't confuse people!

FairVote@fairvote.bsky.social

“We need a more proportional Congress. We would have, I think, more new – sometimes young and fresh – candidates. ‘Return to normal,’ in my view, won’t work.” @petebuttigieg.bsky.social shares why we need proportional representation in an interview with @politico.com. #ProportionalRepresentation ⬇️

I've spent my career fighting gerrymandering through litigation, advocacy, and public education. I even lost huge in the Supreme Court. After Callais, I'm convinced the tools are nearly gone. The problem is structural. My case for proportional representation, in @GlobeOpinion: protdem.org/45XQYuL

Why is anyone paying Dan Walters to write about high speed rail? This is mostly recapping Joe Mathews (actually informative) column and tacking on Walters' disapproving. "It is yet another chapter in a seemingly endless political melodrama." No reporting, nothing added, no point at all in reading.

By my estimate, inflation, meager raises, and pay cuts cost CA state workers $4,200/y since 2019. Global Workplace Analytics's estimates four days of telework saves state workers $4,280 dollars. Telework offset all the losses. That's why Newsom's RTO order has become a worker flashpoint.

The Democratic Party is and remains a heterodox coalition of factions, constrained by single-member districts to fight itself bitterly over what it wants to be when it finally grows up, wasting valuable resources. Alternative: it could be multiple parties.
