It’s been a while since l’ve had crime writing news. I’ve signed a two book contract with Penguin Random House for an historical noir fiction series set in Melbourne. The first book, which takes place in the late 1960s, is out September 2027. You can bet you’ll be hearing more about it soon.

The greatest case of blue balls in cinematic history. Not thrilled by any of these choices but also waaaaaay beyond caring about the 007 franchise going forward.

50 years ago on Saturday 11th September 1976, this infamous issue of ACTION comic appeared on UK shelves. The comic was suspended by the publisher weeks later following a moral panic whipped up by groups offended by its supposedly anti-police sentiment. Art by the late, great Carlos Ezquerra.

Back in Melbourne and seriously jet lagged but managed to open nearly a year and a half’s mail. Maybe l am still out of it, but is one of you David B and, if so, did you send me these books?

My last four on @letterboxd.social - all watched on a long haul flight from Berlin to Melbourne. Black’s PLAY DIRTY is particularly disappointing, arguably the least Intetesting entry in the entire cycle of adaptations of Donald Westlake’s Parker character. CRIME 101 the only highlight.

Wow, Instagram is pretty feral right now, almost matching BlueSky for doomsaying. The end of Europe & the EU. The end of Melbourne CBD, Victoria & Australia generally. The end of Bali as a destination for foreigners, especially influences. And, of course, the end of the US as the ‘land of freedom’

I tried to do my top 9 film and realised that the list would change depending on my mood and what l have been watching lately. I find doing a set in stone for all time list impossible.

RIP Spanish artist Manuel Pérez Clemente aka Sanjulián, who has left us at the age of 85. Here’s some more of his amazing work.

#WyrdWednesday Occult film maker Kenneth Anger declared that Brian Jones was a witch. Unfortunately he was to lose the battle against the forces that assailed him. There are some that consider addiction a form of possession. (Photo of the Beggar's Banquet session, Michael Joseph, June 1968)

Posters for Grigori Kromanov's 1979 sci fi film, DEAD MOUNTAINEER'S HOTEL. Made in Estonia, one of the most advanced members of the Soviet bloc, & with a script by the Strugutsky brothers, no surprise it's a a groundbreaking sci fi film. Terrific cinematography & a simply extraordinary synth score.

If you can, catch this. It is an amazing piece of Soviet science fiction and has the most stunning synth score.

Welcome to a select club, America. The last five countries on earth where the state still puts citizens to death at public executions in 2026 are: • Afghanistan • Iran • North Korea • Somalia • United States of America

Will there be a Mara Lago watch party?

It’s the 55th anniversary of THE FRENCH CONNECTION. But rather than another post about how undeniably groundbreaking Friedkin's effort was, my latest Substack newsletter talks about another aspect of the film. The story of the real French Connection. andrewnette.substack.com/p/the-real-f...
