I honestly don't understand why every parking lot and rooftop in the southern USA isn't covered in solar panels that at least power the air conditioning.

I’ve now lived so much longer than I would ever have expected to that I feel I’m living in the future. This is when I imagined Neuromancer happening. And now the creators of today’s AI warn us that it threatens humanity.

“Scientists should stop trying to be neutral and instead embrace their values,”says a group of top climate scientists, including @katharinehayhoe.com. The neutrality myth is harming the reputation of science right when we need it most.” #ClimateCrisis Science isn’t neutral. It’s science.

Spent all day in Vancouver riding around on a rented e-bike and I gotta say: riding around a city on an electric bike on good protected bike infrastructure is just about the most fun you can have with your pants on.

Anybody have an idea what spider this is? In the wilderness of Wells Gray park, British Columbia. The two white "eyes" are very distinctive. (no alt text, because I need a visual ID)

Since the spring of 2023, I have been creating a non-violent art museum in Doom. My goal was to find art that engaged with the themes that informed Doom's creation, while also exploring the possibilities of virtual museum spaces. Please enjoy this museum. Download link below

If you’re a Democrat and plan to vote this fall, please acquaint yourself now with what looks to me to be a highly skilled extrapolation of where that’s headed. Which is by definition not merely a best guess.

Housing first wins. Period. No if, no ands, no buts. No lengthy, opaque bureaucratic process. No farming out outreach to shady NGO’s. No work requirements. No mandatory drug tests. Just get them in housing. It makes dealing with all their other problems infinitely easier.

“In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back to a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.” IT SAVES PUBLIC MONEY to house people.

I'm Philip the Shipwright. Theseus and I have been friends since childhood. He became a sailor, and I became a ship builder. When we were young, he bought an old boat that he insisted on calling the "Ship of Theseus."

The thing is, I would do all the repairs, and he never could pay me, but we're friends, I felt sorry for him, etc. Well it's been 25 years, I have replaced every board of that boat, and he still insists on calling it the Ship of Theseus, but I say, it should be Philip's Ship.

This suggests that there's a whole different kind of vampire... who doesn't suck your blood...

This is a fascinating discovery. For the first time, a study has shown that older mice given a transplant of gut microbiomes from younger animals boost their brain plasticity. This means their brains are better able to adapt to changes. 🧪 #health #microbiomes www.newscientist.com/article/2531...

A great idea, and they didn't skimp on the fonts. I would have avoided the low-contrast pink on black, but it overall gives a sense of fun.

Thomas House of Dublin exhibiting the pro-human solidarity that all of us should demonstrate.

Imagine my surprise, when I calculated my home's CO2 output from the natural gas furnace and hot water heater for a warm spring month, and discovered that it is equivalent to driving over 800 km in a compact car?

If there are advanced beings, why won't they help us technologically? A compact, non-polluting power supply, for instance. It would change our world.

Here's a broad look at DISCLOSURE DAY. UFO zealots come into the light. Let's discuss more plausible notions of life in the universe. Today'scult is unutterably silly and serves as a distraction from important things. Let us proceed with the dissection! davidbrin.blogspot.com/2026/06/disc...

This is something that bugged me about Iron Man, too. He builds a compact, non-polluting power supply, and then just uses it to be a vigilante. And he's called a super hero. Not once does he share the tech with democracies for civilian power.

Here's an easter egg in the new Lego Batman that I think all of you will REALLY appreciate. It's so good, I had to make a video.

Thanks to this recommendation, I can now do secure video streaming from my home network to any device with a network connection. Even when the hotel network blocks VPNs and large file transfers, making other methods impossible.

As a science fiction writer I really fucking resent tech bros for ruining the phrase "artificial intelligence." 80 years of it being all about cool androids and interesting computers destroyed by five years of "Spicy autocorrect making everything shittier for money." NEVER FORGIVE.

Slavery wasn't abolished just because the good guys won. No, it was partly abolished because technology was making slavery obsolete. Machines are much simpler to deal with than humans. Those same forces eventually came for the family farms, because 1 guy on a combine could farm 3 families' fields.

I see this in my own family. People who would never (admit that they) support Trump, acting appalled at the fascism unfolding around them, and yet, they can't get their minds free of the things and people that the fascists have encouraged them to hate. They still blame the immigrants, etc.

since it's May 4th, I suppose I should re-up the only thing I've ever written about a Star Wars. more specifically, it's about how Syril Karn is a metaphor for reactionary centrists who can't help but “punch left” even as fascism is unfolding all around them: juliaserano.medium.com/syril-karn-a...
