The Grand Old Rape Party

Prem Thakker ツ@premthakker.bsky.social

NEW: "Donald Trump was an active participant in Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse of young women during the mid-to-late 1990s," per new House Judiciary Dem report. Report has new allegation that Trump raped a 24-year-old and then promised the victim a visa & NYU admission, demanding she stay quiet.

Kat Tenbarge was recently talking about the sadistic hazing incident Jon Hamm took part in as an undergraduate and it made me wonder how many guys are just going around walking among us with that kind of stuff in their past.

Like, some of "difficulty" is just gaslighting. If you think of gaslighting as the official story coming across the line of a power differential, then yeah, what really happened is kind of blurry. But that's because the person with power in the situation wants it to be nuanced.

The murkiness of he said/she said version was manufactured in that case, by the patriarchal family and then reinforced by the patriarchal institution, the police.

Take the example of the story I reposted below, of the girl who recorded her step-father assaulting her. What happened was quite clear, and her recording matched her very clear original view of what happened. But her family and then the cop muddied the waters with the assumption that she was lying.

Similarly, maybe the Sylvia Plath story is mostly about the fact that Ted Hughes was abusive. There *is* the complicating factor that she had issues before meeting him, but those were probably not helped by abuse!

My sense is that the things she was interested in for their difficulty were not actually all that difficult. But I tend to take the Judith Herman view of Freud, and think that we spent a century+ debating seduction theory, when we could have reckoned with the fact that sexual assault is common.

A recently divorced friend who has been going on a series of crazy dates through a certain app and has been reporting back from the field. It is wildly entertaining. Surely, someone has come up with a column or web series called "Unhinged" with this premise?

We need to start investing billions in Irish children’s books now or Irish kids could cause the apocalypse before the end of the century. If we don’t get them reading good books (like mine) soon, it could all be too late. #SpeirGorm

wonder if I could get more attention if I started doing what all the AI staffers are doing now but for my own work. coming out like “there’s a 10% chance independent Irish online-only opinion columns might end humanity in the next decade”

Actually the end goal is to redefine feminism as sex-based rights, whatever the fuck those are. Feminism is equal rights. Feminism is autonomy over your own body - like what trans people are asking for. The goal of propaganda is to suck all the meaning out of politically motivating concepts.

have you not seen that the end goal is the end of girls sports altogether? preceded by mass sexual assaults in the check to make sure no trans kids accidentally take part? they've already tipped their hand here, why play along?

The reason it's important to fight back hard on these distortions as they appear is that you don't want to end up in a world where you've lost control of basic definitions. As a Democrat, you don't want "liberty" to mean the freedom to carry a gun everywhere. Definitions are the ballgame.

If Democratic politicians don't understand the use of rhetoric - including the kind their opponents use against them - they are not very skilled politicians. Understanding rhetoric and using it to your advantage is an extremely basic part of the job.

I tend to see the Talarico/trans rights issue more in terms of long term damage to the party. As I say, anti-trans legislation is *already* targeting ALL of girls sports, and it would be super freaking dumb for the Democratic party to come out against girls sports, no?

The Lis Smith aspect kinda gives the game away because she is so clearly working to bend the Democratic party towards the interests of billionaires rather than for good results for the party.

It's like the women listening to Platner's non-denials about his dating past and going, hmm, bet there's fire under this here smoke. The theoretical benefit from attracting more men does not overcome the INCREDIBLE FUCKING DAMAGE from having a rapist on the ballot.

Does this not make sense to people? Personally, it's hard for me NOT to see GOP anti-trans arguments as bad faith attempts to destroy the Democratic Party from within, given that the Putin/Christian right alliance managed to do this in the UK. (Another thing U.S. trans people see better!)

The problem is that the GOP position is not real. There is no harm to girls from letting a handful of trans kids play soccer or whatever. The HUGE harm is going to be the destruction of girls sports from making them "verify" that they are girls to play. Similar to the shenanigans in the WNBA.

Trans people have the strong moral argument that they should not be harmed to benefit the rest of us. But beyond that, they can also see what's coming down the pike for all of women's sports, because they are paying closer attention to the issue.

Like, I think the argument tends to be do we just harm this small group in a tiny way - just for now - but for everyone's benefit, including the small group! And... that's not what's happening. The Democratic party is damaging its appeal to major parts of its own base.

This seems more similar to the argument over Platner. Does it matter that some women think he's sketchy if he can draw working class white men to the party? And YEAH, it turns out it freaking DOES matter, because he's actually a rapist and putting him on the ballot would be poison.
