Yooo ryan published in LC lets go

so kinda, but also, as someone who has been in the front lines of job hunting, and with a MAJOR CAVEAT being that I am Black and transgender and thus have systemic disadvantages in capitalist labor markets to begin with, it has been this bad for a long, long time.

But this is being driven by structural factors that have made the experience of getting a job more and more miserable, even though the actual rate of people not getting a job hasn't gotten worse in aggregate

(though I believe it HAS gotten worse for specific subgroups, but the problem is that even if say, 20% of trans people get laid off, which would be apocalyptic as an national aggregate, that's what, 0.1% of the national employment rate? Easy to register as just noise)

AI is making this worse, yes, because it's being used in applicant tracking systems, but also being used to *beat* applicant tracking systems. It is convincing firms they do not need entry level employees

(and quite frankly, they don't - entry level jobs were de-facto paid apprenticeships, but they didn't want to admit such because everything MUST have some kind of immediate RoI, which is why the idea of AI replacing entry level work is so appealing even if it's eating your seed-corn)

obviously we're aware of nepotism and all that, but that's sort of the tip of the iceberg compared to where the personal connection influences candidate selection *between* competent applicants.

This is where the whole "Black and transgender" comes in, while obviously there's discrimination (lots of firms will just not hire a transgender person), even in a non-discriminatory context, structurally, we have less personal connections to leverage to get us to the top of the pile.

It is very, VERY difficult to change fields, and you require a strong network to even contemplate it. Getting entry level work basically *requires* a relevant degree, and in most cases, they want people actually college-aged.

Hyper-specialization is insane, as are requirements - the trends towards more and more specific job requirements, and more and more interview rounds, and harder and harder entry level hiring, have only gotten worse as time has gone on.

Yes the Cenk Uygur ad is antisemitic, yes it is transphobic, but it’s the *interaction effect* between the antisemitism and the transphobia that causes it to give off so many Hitler particles

looked at in longer perspective, it's striking how much this resembles the premodern system of exclusion, rents, and personalist connections, which was--and this part's important--radically worse than the modern system of impersonal rules and general taxation

But the fact is that modern liberal, center-left, and left political movements are *insufficiently* transnationalized — especially when compared to the transnational right. We are *behind* the curve. Our leaders are behind the curve.

Also - I actually take seriously the idea that all of these people are lying out of their ass. But: - I question the utility of lying, especially when you can just look up a candidates previous pro-trans votes and positions in 5 seconds with the supercomputer in your pocket

Even if you don't mean it, referring to trans women with terminology that is *worse* than referring to Black people as n**gers is morally reprehensible and cannot be supported, regardless of motive.

also, going back to the "trans people are uniquely traumatized" - it's not very trust-building to essentially retraumatize that group by calling said group slurs for the sake of maybe getting a few low-engagement Republicans who *might* turn out to "protect women's sports" or whatever to stay home.

So again, whether they're all lying, and will vote for pro-trans legislation once they're safe from their voter base for 6 years, you've still inflicted a lot of damage on a lot of people, for something that might not even help you, because you thought you might lower R turnout by 0.1%.

Also - I actually take seriously the idea that all of these people are lying out of their ass. But: - I question the utility of lying, especially when you can just look up a candidates previous pro-trans votes and positions in 5 seconds with the supercomputer in your pocket

- In order to lie to your enemies, you have to lie to your friends, without any real way to signal to your friends that you're lying (and these friends are a pretty uniquely traumatized group) - Once you start lying politically, it becomes hard to trust any position.

- Once again, what exactly is the utility here? Notice that the arguments for this stuff have shifted to "we can get Republicans to stay home", but what are the numbers on this? How many Republicans are going to stay home because the Dem said "biological men"?

A new survey of 1,000 American adults found that the strongest supporters of transgender sports bans are not the people who admire women most: they are the people who hold the most hostile views about women. www.helenwebberley.com/news/transge...

Brazil’s results tonight are a big endorsement for the idea that every country should have a second “are you you sure about that” election a couple weeks after the first one for the important stuff

i don't know how to tell "pragmatic" liberals that trans people are not going to "pragmatically" accept being called the equivalent or (in my view, as a BLACK trans woman) worse of n**ger over and over because they're terrified of Elon Musk ad spend even if it's like 1% of Democrats

Yeah, uhhh, we DEFINITELY won't win any kind of revolution. So what's left? Well, the Dems calling us slurs can get fucked, but we have to engage in political struggle so it becomes unacceptable for Dems to call us slurs. So triage Iowa, whatever. Don't need that seat for the gavel.

I'm a socialist of the Kautsky/Bernstein line, the socialists that have actually gotten shit done in the world, despite their flaws (fuck Ebert and Noske for example), and fundamentally, you're not going to change shit by pining for a miracle to occur in the form of a violent collapse of society

I think about @aselrod.bsky.social's www.liberalcurrents.com/you-wont-win... a lot, and I think about the fact that we're like, 3-5% of the population, not armed at all, disproportionately disabled and neurodivergent, not really acquainted with the kind of violence that happens in Revolutions

liberalcurrents.comYou Won’t Win the RevolutionThe descent of stable societies into ones of endemic violence rarely produces anything but new forms of tyranny and terror.

Look, I'm an electoralist, like 95-99% of the time I believe you should vote Dem to make the country and the world a better place. I don't believe the firebomb the walmart shit you see on here works. But I can't ask people to vote for people calling them slurs!

With that said, I'm going to reiterate that you should vote for the better Dems, and organize both within and outside the party to change society, and not do this "oh we need a communist revolution" shit that basically amounts to a vent post. Like, I can't overstate how little seriously i take that

Yeah like, the Republican is way worse on policy, and transphobia, but at some point we're talking about thymos, and recognition, and all that, and I do not think any other demographic in the coalition would be berated to essentially submit to degradation for pragmatic reasons.

Like, young cis men actively voted for fascism, and the strategic response was to mute our values and have leading Dem figures express agreement with Charlie Kirk and have Senators complain that the party was too gay and faggy or whatever. Where's the smoke for that shit?

but then again we punch above our weight electorally too so what is all this "hey lets complain that trans people don't want to vote for Dems that call us slurs" talk? Like, what are you trying to accomplish? The vast majority of us are going to vote straight-ticket D, including me.

Why is it so important to people that trans people hold their noses and vote for the *specific D candidates that are LARPing as George Wallace* (who was pro-civil rights until he lost an election over it, then became known as the Segregation Forever guy).

People talk about Black electoral pragmatism, and it's real, but it's also earned community loyalty. Call me when a combination of ENDA with teeth, absolute self-ID as federal law, and massive downward wealth redistribution coupled with trans affirmative action gets through.

Sorry we have mass media and you can't hide the Jim Crow Democrats like you could in the 40s (and that tore the party apart then as it is.) And that was with like half of us being able to vote at the time.

the only reason I don't say the word so people feel the full visceral impact of what I am trying to say is site moderation, which generally doesn't care that it's a Black person saying the hard-r to make a point. I've said multiple times, I would rather be called "n**ger" than "biological male".

There's also never been any evidence to suggest that Obama's opposition to gay marriage in 2008 that everyone knew to be fake was actually a necessary intermediary step

with that said, I think critiques of shitty Democrats should be framed as critiques of shitty Democrats, not of "the party" - it is important to note that party discipline is structurally only bottom up, because of McGovern-Fraser and other reforms.

And most Dems (even if you count the NDAA votes, which I personally do, but I understand if you don't want to count a poison pill) haven't backslid yet. Dooming or engaging in fantasies of overturning the system (at least without having done the organizational work) are not helpful
