When I pitched a review of Anton Jäger's Hyperpolitics, I wanted to read it against Fukuyama's End of History and the Last Man because both books tackle similar themes in radically different ways.
The result is a double-helix of an essay that is one of the best things I've ever written for LC.
A matchup between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Tampa Bay Rays was considered a “nightmare,” a bloodbath of small-ball hermeneutics. But the two old-school, thrifty teams have turned the Fall Classic into a showcase for what money can’t buy. www.newyorker.com/sports/sport...
they're all on xitter and deep frying their brains with "the perfidious jew invented evil gender ideology to groom your kids through steven universe and make the white man a servant to israel" slop
so insular they don't even realize how associating these two things looks to people on the outside
Yes the Cenk Uygur ad is antisemitic, yes it is transphobic, but it’s the *interaction effect* between the antisemitism and the transphobia that causes it to give off so many Hitler particles

I, for one, think that Raman should refuse to submit to DSA National's Bondage and Discipline Socialism. And DSA-LA should tell DSA-National to fuck right off.
But then, I'm a liberal socialist. A maverick, some say.
One resolution (which passed 14-13) calls on Raman to meet with DSA-LA leaders on Oct. 31 to explain her position on BDS. If she does not satisfactorily affirm her support for BDS, the NPC will vote on Nov. 1 to force DSA-LA to withdraw its endorsement of her. docs.google.com/document/d/1...
Modal outcome here:
* Raman wins comfortably
* DSA looks weak because their endorsement or its withdrawal doesn't matter
* DSA looks even weaker because constant messy intra-factional beefs caused the above
NEW: DSA's National Political Committee passed two resolutions today aimed at Los Angeles mayoral candidate Nithya Raman, beginning processes that could result in DSA-LA being forced to rescind its endorsement of her this weekend and/or Raman herself being expelled from DSA by January.
Yeah, this is really bad. It's good that El-Sayed distanced himself from it, but I am in awe at how Cenk's left-wing PAC managed to combine antisemitism with transphobia and pitch it as *supporting* the Democrat in this race.
So even after the Brewskis won Game 2, I felt like those games were so narrow, with the Rays fighting so hard, and the final scores coming down to inches and overturned calls, that the Devil Rays would be favored on their home turf.
But to see them go down like *this*... yeah, rethinking that.
The first two games were deserved wins for the Brewers, yet at no point did I think the Rays looked gassed. Now? I actually texted a friend asking faer, "Did the Brewers break their *will*?" Still a long road ahead, you can come back from a 3-love deficit, but oof.
The thing I love about baseball is that there is no sport that is as statistical *while also* making a mockery of mathematical certainty at every conceivable turn.
While I was searching for this gif they got three more runs. That was a Devil Ray *collapse*. I understand rays only do this when they're very distressed, it is not funny.
Over 2,000 alumni from Vivek’s all-boys catholic high school in Cincinnati have signed and circulated a petition demanding that he pull the ad and issue a public apology for “ignoring the moral responsibilities” of his Jesuit education. I think he’s pretty cooked.
My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today.
Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.
This, but also, as a liberal I believe in freedom and human rights for all people, all around the world. That translates into rooting interests in elections where freedoms and rights are on the ballot, as they often are.
I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.
on the internet people will call almost anything liberalism. war with iraq, death by firing squad, npic infighting, everything. so a few weeks ago at liberal currents, we put out a challenge to all the editors: what is liberalism, actually? today we get our first essay, from lc founder adam gurri:
“What I will offer you instead is something simpler, and perhaps harder: a vision of life under liberalism, as distinct from the political project.” www.liberalcurrents.com/liberalism-i...

The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government.
In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.
Of course a win for non-authoritarian leaders or movements does not automatically mean all problems are solved or that authoritarian forces can't come back in future.
But it is worth maintaining hope and optimism, because if people succumb to nihilism and apathy then democracy cannot survive.
Brazil’s results tonight are a big endorsement for the idea that every country should have a second “are you you sure about that” election a couple weeks after the first one for the important stuff
Lula has been reelected president, Brazilian media has now called.
An extraordinary comeback for the left-wing politician who trailed by 2 points in round 1 but managed to hold off Flávio Bolsonaro, the former president's son.
So I'm seeing the current vote count with Bolsonaro 0.8% ahead, but a lot of people are starting to sound very certain of a Lula victory; what am I missing here? (Genuine question--looking for insight!)
Are we just not getting a ton in from heavily pro-Lula areas yet?
