Yeah, their whole position is "we want fewer babes in the world"!

A new survey of 1,000 American adults found that the strongest supporters of transgender sports bans are not the people who admire women most: they are the people who hold the most hostile views about women. www.helenwebberley.com/news/transge...

My prediction is that if the Democrats win this year and again two years from now, there will be a push to break up Skydance, which the party shuts down and treats as "unserious." After all, it's just a movie company!

The animating principle of the Republican Party is reveling in being a bad person

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

WOW -- Vance *defends* Vivek's reprehensible ad 👇 Q: Ramaswamy's campaign put out a controversial ad featuring his opponent's mother. Some Republicans are backing away. Do you think it was appropriate? JD VANCE: Well, I'll be honest. Whether the ad was appropriate or not is not really my concern.

What I am being told now is that I have no choice but to vote for the Democrats in every single election for the rest of my life, or America will immediately fall to fascism. But if this is the case, then fascism has already fatally undermined electoral politics.

This image annoys the shit out of me. Paul isn't bad, but he isn't good either! The Dune series is about the tyranny of the Nietzschean superman who is above morals. Paul exists beyond humanity in many ways and is trapped by this apparent freedom.

British society is organized entirely to appease the aunt who hasn't smiled in ten years and shares posts on Facebook about subliminal Satanic images.

The British government is banning pornography that includes depictions of choking, incest & adults roleplaying as children. The ban goes into place from November 6th. (www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...)

I've realized that people endlessly bring up Lovecraft and his racism because it's a lot easier than coming to grips with the fact that there are a lot of fucked-up bigots in the world of genre fiction. Lovecraft - the perpetual outsider - is a sin eater for us.

You can endlessly mock Lovecraft for his racism because his work has been laundered through so many adaptations and references that you don't even need to read him directly anymore to be a fan. But you can't do that with, say, Niven, who wanted the Bush administration to deny migrants medicine.

Lovecraft's racism was extreme, but also ineffectual. It was as much a tool of self-loathing as it was anything else. He was a shut-in who communicated mainly by letter with other authors. These endless ruminations on his racism are borderline navel-gazing and a false illusion of progress.

At some point, I wonder whether they're just that dumb or whether they realize they no longer have the power to punish. What happens if she tries to hold the government in contempt and the administration ignores her?

Our society and culture were priming themselves for the introduction of art made exactly for the individual long before genAI.

My biggest worry is that the increasing demand for this stuff is leading to a chilling effect on horror stories that are actually horrifying. Publishers having submission calls for horror free of the blood and guts and icky parts. The gentrification of horror.

It started with the rise of fanfics as the primary way fans interact with their favorite media, then progressed to people "reviewing" media according to strict binary checklists. Then came the algorithms, which pushed us past the event horizon.

Watching the prom sequence in De Palma's Carrie, it's clear that the audience isn't *actually* laughing at Carrie. They're shocked and silenced with horror. They're bystanders, and she then brutally slaughters them all.

I can't see Carrie, as a story, working if Carrie is anywhere near a normal, functioning person. She's somebody so broken by her mother's abuse that she'd never actually fit into society, and the prom night is a result of people trying to do that as a misguided act of kindness.

My first thought was, "Why doesn't this woman divorce this guy who clearly doesn't want to be around the children?" But the answer is probably, "he has enough money to win custody in divorce proceedings, and she knows he would absolutely wreck those kids' chances of being normal."

putting “raising my child” in the catagory of ways how ai will streamline my life

Remember when Brazil was supposed to be the example America followed in terms of convicting the ex-President who tried to overthrow the government? I guess the problem facing democracy right now is greater than just one guy per country.

People have been saying this shit about far-right leaders since Thatcher or Nixon or even earlier. But these ghouls always die so long after leaving office that all you do when you hear about it is shrug and get back to your life they made worse.

My pitch for the next Halloween movie is to keep The Shape but ditch Michael Myers. Never refer to The Shape by a proper name. Ditch Haddonfield, too. Set it in a town that is in no way expecting a massacre to happen.

I looked up gameplay footage of Halloween: The Game today. Most of the videos were titled "This game is a disaster," but the first video I saw had the player controlling Laurie Strode with big glasses, and I'm getting this game immediately.
