Got my Autechre tickets for tomorrow night. I can't wait for the gig but goddamnit, it's two QR codes in an email. That's not exactly warm, nostalgic memorabilia is it? This was from the last time I went to see them. It's lovely stumbling upon this now and again and letting the memories come back.

For two decades I've stood firmly by my belief that Cliff Richard's Millennium Prayer is the single shittiest song in existence. I guess it's nice to see he's gunning for another one. Good on him.

I'm disappointed by the new Avalanches album. It should be something I adore: plunderphonics, shuffling through dance music history, an electronic music version of The Residents' Commercial Album. It has ideas for days, a few of them stick, all for something very anaemic.

Just got back from a talk by Helen McCarthy on the history and artistic influences of Studio Ghibli. Here was this small lady dressed head-to-toe in Totoro clothing being a walking encyclopaedia about everything, highlighting the influence of Shinto, de Chirico, Buddhism, French films on Miyazaki.

It was utterly lovely. In the Q&A someone asked what her favourite Ghibli film is. She said “I’ll tell you my favourite scene from not just my favourite Ghibli but the greatest film of all-time” then beautifully retold Totoro’s bus stop scene in detail and with great pacing like a proper storyteller

Watching this after years of caring for elderly people and just last week returning home from a trip to Wales where I accidentally took my mum up some mountain pass that was the highest highest road in the north of the country certainly gave it a lot of extra meaning. It's an incredible film.

Woah! Lost In Cult are doing film stuff now?!

I gave this album a listen in my early 20s, thought it was alright, then again in my early 30s and thought the same thing. Now at 42, this is one of the best things I've ever heard. I'm such an idiot.

Picked up some cinema from a charity table. It stood out amongst all the rubbish airport romance literature, like a diamond in the rough. A movie you most watch happy view

I read through the Wikipedia article about his dad and Chaka Khan and it suggests that he wasn't a great person to her. It also says one of the children he had with her (before my mate was born) was accused of killing someone with an M16 in 2006 although he was acquitted but found liable.

A bit of a rollercoaster finding all this out about one of my old friends. Unfortunately we fell out and drifted apart. I wonder how he must've reacted or felt with all that.

...and there we were, a bunch of 18/19 year old art students smoking weed with the dad of one us while he was showing us all the storyboards of the dinosaurs and landscapes. That was a very odd scenario.

The other day I found out that same guy was once married to Chaka Khan but they separated years before my friend was born to another mother. I remember even playing "I Feel For You" (as part of this DJ mix) to my friend during one of our many late night loud music sessions and he said nothing.

I've been going through this series from the start and it's been fun, like slowly eating a big bowl of random pick and mix sweets, some delicious, some horrible (UB40 are inescapable). I've yet to discover some lost gem though, all the best songs are the ones we remember now.
