Ok so like. Time to start talking about this digital sustainability thingy. Basically, every transaction of data we make online requires energy from a potentially non-renewable resource. So like, let’s solve that with design. We all want the simplest, best experiences. reallygood.work

Let your design tokens do the heavy lifting—clear naming, consistent theming, system-wide performance. You’ll meet regulations, future-proof your work, and create truly adaptive experiences.

Think of your design tokens as more than just ways to manage colours and spacing—they’re the backbone of accessibility. Want to update contrast across a multi-brand system? Set up colour contrast checks in your pipeline and you’re good to go. Automate accessibility, don’t just tick boxes!

Here’s where most people get stuck: thinking of accessibility as a last-minute checklist or a compliance hassle. But what if you made it part of your design DNA from day one?

Big news: New European regulations are about to raise the bar for digital products. As of June 2025, the European Accessibility Act makes accessibility non-negotiable for websites, apps, e-commerce, and more.

If you’re working on self-service devices, banking, or transport, you’re in the spotlight. 🚨 Accessibility is no longer a ‘nice-to-have’—it’s a must.

Want a practical way in? Get obsessed with your design tokens. Naming conventions & consistent use across brands help weed out redundant code and assets. Less bloat = faster loads = lower emissions. It really *is* that simple. 🏃💨🌳

If you care about sustainability in systems, performance is your new best friend. Audit your component libraries, refactor what you don’t need, and leverage design tokens to keep it lean & green. Every bit of optimization is a win for your users *and* the environment. 🌎✨

Slower sites = more server power, more data flying around, and yep—more CO₂ emissions. Suddenly, performance isn’t just nice-to-have. It’s a sustainability play. ⚡️🌱

The real shift for me? Realizing that optimizing for speed = optimizing for impact. Every millisecond saved via smarter design means less energy used to deliver those experiences.

You're not scaling your product—you're scaling your patterns. Most teams think they're scaling their product. But what they're actually scaling are the patterns they use to build it.

It's not about locking people into rigid rules. It's about giving them a solid pattern to build freely—with consistency, speed, and clarity. Because sustainable systems aren't built from scratch every time. They're grown—on purpose, with purpose.

Want your patterns to scale as fast as your ambitions? Let's talk. I'm a Design Systems expert and coach working with the Tokens Studio team. DM me to get in touch!

So the question isn't: "Can our product scale?" It's: "Are our patterns built to handle the scale we're aiming for?" Because if they're not—you'll start to feel it. In bloated codebases. In slow load times. In inconsistent user experiences.

In frustrated designers and developers hacking their way through something that was supposed to make their lives easier. A strong design system doesn't just save time. It creates repeatable, scalable logic across your team.

Every new feature. Every page. Every component reuse. It's all powered by decisions you've already made—about naming, structure, spacing, interaction, accessibility, performance.

Couldn’t agree more. The div hell this creates couldn’t demonstrate more of a flippant lack of care for audiences. It’s the equivalent of a snotty teenager passive aggressively doing their chores while rolling their eyes at you. Is this really what we want the internet to be?

We're time traveling back to 1997 today, when WISYWIG editors were all the rage. In the decades since, web technology has clawed its way from that primitive state with semantic HTML that made accessibility possible and let content drive appearance rather than vice-versa. Then Figma blew it all up.

Let’s reframe what digital sustainability really means. It’s not just cleaner code or greener hosting. It’s about inclusivity. Because when your site is lighter, faster, and thoughtfully built, more people get to show up. #digitalsustainability #inclusivedesign

A more inclusive site is a more effective site. It shows up faster. It works harder. It reaches farther. And it reflects your values in action, not just words.

Digital sustainability = inclusive by default. It’s design that invites everyone in and leaves no one behind. That’s the future. Let’s build it together. ✌️

Here’s what we know: - 92% of users will leave a site if it loads slowly - Over 60% of the world accesses the web through mobile - 1 in 5 people live with a disability - global digital access gaps are widening

Inclusive brands build lean, clear, respectful digital experiences. That means less friction, more access, and stronger connections. You’re not just being “nice.” You’re being smart.

Let’s reframe what digital sustainability really means. It’s not just cleaner code or greener hosting. It’s about inclusivity. Because when your site is lighter, faster, and thoughtfully built, more people get to show up. #digitalsustainability #inclusivedesign

Inclusivity means welcoming everyone: - People on slow networks - People on older phones - People using assistive tech - People in rural areas - People with different abilities, bandwidths, or browsers Designing for them doesn’t limit creativity. It amplifies your brand’s reach.

Not everyone can afford to upgrade their phone every year. Not everyone wants to toss a working device into a landfill just to keep up. Building sustainable sites means respecting that. And meeting people where they are, not where the industry says they should be.

One of the easiest things you can do to speed up your site is subset your custom fonts. This means getting rid of any characters you may or may not need to dramatically shrink the size of the file. Luckily, I made a very cool tool to make this easy to do with www.npmjs.com/package/glyp....

npmjs.comglyphripperA command-line tool for subsetting and converting fonts to web-friendly formats while preserving variable font features. Latest version: 1.0.0, last published: a few seconds ago. Start using…

So often, we're embedding font files into our products that include math symbols, accents and other characters when all we need is uppercase, lowercase, punctuation and some numbers. This just means extra, unneeded stuff we're sending to users - which requires energy.

Ever thought about how your website or app impacts the environment? Digital products consume energy—from servers to the devices accessing them. Digital sustainability creates tech that minimizes environmental impact while maximizing business value. #DigitalSustainability #GreenTech #SmartDesign

At Really Good Work, this means: - Efficient code that reduces energy consumption - Smart UX design for quicker task completion - Optimized media reducing data transfer - Clean hosting powered by renewable energy - Durable digital products that don't need constant rebuilds

The win-win? These planet-friendly practices create faster, more user-friendly experiences that convert better and cost less to maintain. Digital sustainability builds smarter assets that perform better across every metric that matters.

America. What the eff man. We’re your buds and have always had your backs. With love. With support. Not only are you going to hurt your economy (and ours), but you’re hurting your friends who did absolutely nothing to you. This sucks. For no reason.

Digital sustainability is the easiest, simplest and most no-brainer way you can save the earth by working in technology. While others are building rockets to escape the earth they destroyed, I’m going to save it for those who believe we still have a fighting chance.

A reminder that if you have Tesla stocks, even if you don’t agree with him or the new administration, you’re complicit. Get rid of those things immediately.
