POLITE REQUEST (yes, it's in capitals) I have no interest in Crypto, TechBro or StartUp Cultures. I don't really require or easily accept glib, anodyne 'motivational' advisors (unless it's me). And I can only really sufficiently manage to read English French or Danish with coherence. #PleaseUnfollow

Thought experiment. Criminal gang plans armed robbery. Prepares entry, action & getaway. Arranges transport, weapons, disguises, baggage. Assigns tasks, ground rules, possible scenarios. Its a major crime with risks & consequences but there are conventions & protocols that tend to be adhered to.

There was some kind of weak satire in 'Point Break' with bank robbers masked as ex-US presidents. Trump has been so long trapped in his fake uniform, clown make up, personality tics, catalogue of lies, YMCA dancing deceit etc that his true, serial criminal constantly haunts him. There is no getaway

He left a trail of victims all the way to the bank. Everything is closing in on him as he continues to unconvincingly tell everyone & anyone rhat this is his bank & his money because look he picked all the clichéd symbols of wealth & security himself & set the timers on the explosives in the vault.

What sort of deep seated criminality allows perpetrators to never disguise their identity from their victims but demands a vast array of new bluffs, strategies, contrived demeanours, elaborate masks are constantly worn in public life as the generic clothing, fake persona creates a veneer of control?

How heavily must you regularly victimise & crush wills whilst seeking the constant camouflage of large audiences, shared financial & legal obligation, well-known faces with suspicious behaviours, carefully sharing your notoriety among ever worse fellow perpetrators & fakes. Obsessing about hygiene.

Police are following all possible leads, appeal to the wider public re unusual behaviour, supply of materials. Witnesses comforted, offered counselling. Film/tv dramatisations play up the meticulousness, daring, desperation, jeopardy, originality, random factors, gains, newly camouflaged lifestyle.

Several films play up the adopted persona, the snappy uniforms, the subterfuge & bluffing. Which intensifies the regular trope of the mask slipping. Just for a moment their face, a glimpse of a scar or tattoo, an over-familiar turn of phrase during a future chance meeting of apparent strangers.

It is sensible to minimise trauma or fight/flight anxiety in others & it smooths compliance in the moment. I'm no expert but it may help those unwillingly involved to get past the experience. Wearing gloves, masks, generic clothes, saying very little. Assured invisibility, path of least resistance.

It's not theatre but roles are assigned. Part of which is a 'clean' getaway without return or fallout & if not exactly 'closure' a return to relative normalcy for most. News reporting has a peculiar currency in terms of outrage, victimisation, monetary gain, audacity, professionalism & 'hygiene'.

There is a complex étiquette around disguising your identity. Self-preservation, an element of dissociation, a veneer of control or power projected onto the situation. There is also a form of etiquette towards victims & bystanders. Not exactly a blissful ignorance but safer when not knowing.

Dear compounders of generic paracetomol for major retailers, please reconsider your packaging materials so that your product leaves it wholly intact every time. Foil so strong that 50% of caplets break into fragments when pushed through is poor work. #FFS

Yet more reason to consign that inane 'move fast & break things' Fuckerberg mantra back to the infantile Super Mario Bros. context where it might have once had a slim, meaningful utility.

In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

Surprised that more is not made of the rank hypocrisy of AI Execs wishing to keep their impressionable LLMs & Botbrains well away from accessing the Internet until they have matured in their development enough to refrain from self-destructive, counter-productive & illegal activities.

I’m an officer of the law and what you’re doing is illegal!!! Yes, thank you, NYPD. And whoever’s backing them up. I guess it’s the president. Oops I mean the mayor.

In my new Expert Voices column @science.org, I argue that the Trump admin's science strategy (as written in Kratsios' Science: A Golden Age)--which gives more authority & funding to the private sector to direct the research enterprise--will harm science, and further erode its public accountability.

Newsflash. These 300 jobs will still be lost. Some data on UK oil industry subsidies also needed.

Leo Hickman@leohickman.carbonbrief.org

From the govt's press release: "The developer estimates that Jackdaw will create 27 new direct jobs and safeguard 273 existing jobs that would otherwise be lost." Odd that so much is made about this being good for jobs. Your nearest out-of-town supermarket likely generates more jobs.

Inevitable, only days after Netanyahu appears on media pointing at a big map. (on which 🇮🇱 is a tiny nation)

We are watching a piece of shit US president sell out Ukraine to Russia in real time. This is a moment of shame for America and the world. Stand with Ukraine

Rubio, Hegseth, Trump himself keep obfuscating about contributing to civilian deaths in 🇺🇦 by failing to provide necessary intelligence/weapons procurement. Muttering about refinery strikes affecting 🇺🇸 diesel prices. Isn't it jeopardising 🇷🇺 election interference which they now rely on in mid-terms?

What a horrendous proposition.

Can anyone explain the mass proliferation of data centres in terms of quantum computing/processing advances/research? Because I thought quantum was the real future option. Mass data per se seems more a contain/control hierarchy thing. Is there a symbiosis or are they distinct/competing goals?

Daytime BBC's thirst for renovation tv has them showing RTE's 'Great House Revival'. Window delays, wrangling sustainability into old masonry etc. Hugh Wallace may be a fine architect but as presenter/narrator his language, diction & exposition are painfully over-engineered. Much like his zany specs
