Related? Today I rediscovered an obscure piece of media that is the opposite of unrecommendable. It's an IF game which perhaps has the most interesting premise of anything I've ever played, and gives a fascinating portrayal of disability and transness (it's also free!) red-autumn.itch.io/archivist

one of the feelings of all time is being obsessed with an obscure piece of media that not only has nothing even resembling a fanbase but is also completely unrecommendable, so you're just languishing in those thoughts alone. or perhaps flourishing in them. it's a matter of perspective

you should play the social democracy game, now. if you already have, play it again. if you're currently playing it, open it in a new window and play it twice at the same time

This is one of the main lessons of Social Democracy: An Alternate History!

It’s remarkable how persistent this myth is. German democracy survived hyperinflation; it did not survive mass unemployment in the 1939s. It would be better to say this the other way round: because German leaders are conservative, they remember hyperinflation. giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/...

The DDP votes against the Treaty of Versailles, in a bizarre move where it defends the other parties of the "Weimar Coalition" for voting for it and also defends the SPD in its official journal from accusations of communism.

Bill McKay@mckay4senate.bsky.social

The DDP attempts to make an insane set of conditions on the Treaty of Versailles despite Germany being in no position to negotiate, leading to them leaving the Scheidemann cabinet. The cabinet itself would soon collapse and Bauer forms a government of just the SPD and Z parties that accepts it.

Hearing reports that top Democratic officials have stated that the US was not defeated militarily, but was betrayed by certain key politicians. Chuck Schumer has met with returning servicemen and declared that "no enemy [had] vanquished [them]" and that they were "undefeated on the battlefield"

9. Basically every action taken by any faction or party in the Weimar Republic makes sense if one realizes that no one knew Hitler was going to be Hitler.

1. The liberals (in particular the DVP) were more responsible for the ultimate fall of the Weimar Republic than the KPD. (DISCLAIMER: THIS POST IS NOT ABOUT PRESENT-DAY US POLITICS)

i actually do love that "class traitor" spd is a completely viable strategy. you can just cut taxes to the rich, raise tariffs, and offer only the most tepid response to the great depression and excel electorally* * (ignore the rising tide of fascism and the 20% unemployment)

It's interesting how the centrist faction of US politics resembles the DVP (claims to be a people's party but actually represents big business interests, collapses the coalition due to tax/welfare policy, aggressively nationalistic rhetoric, ...). Claims to be Stresemann but are actually Dingeldey

The Democrats are basically the Weimar Coalition while the Republicans are the Harzburg Front (or the 1925 pro-Hindenburg coalition). There's no real equivalent of Zentrum but the closest might be the Democratic ethnic caucuses (ideologically diverse, represent historically oppressed groups).

Weimar parties as US political factions: SPD - Congressional Progressive Caucus DDP - New Democrats DVP - Blue Dogs/Problem Solvers DNVP - Republican Study Committee NSDAP - Freedom Caucus There is no KPD or BVP equivalent.

The KPD sucked but I don't think this is an accurate allocation of blame for the fall of the Weimar Republic. KPD + SPD never got nearly 50% of the vote (closer to 40%). Imo much more of the blame goes to the Protestant conservative-liberal bourgeois bloc (DVP mostly but also DStP, WP, etc)

Tbh I don't really blame the SPD for distrusting the KPD. The KPD was effectively an agent of Moscow and there was bad blood from stuff like the Prussian Reichstag referendum of 1931 where the KPD joined with the NSDAP to try to depose the SPD-les Prussian government.

On the other hand, I think that even in a world where the KPD cooperated with the SPD, Hindenburg and the bourgeois parties would never include the KPD in government (even if the KPD just tolerated), and would also be less inclined to cooperate with the SPD, leading to the same problems as irl.

The SPD is also not blameless here. During both the Preußenschlag in 1932 and Hitler's takeover in 1933, the KPD asked the SPD to jointly resist via mass action, but the SPD refused, distrusting the KPD and considering any action premature.
