The middle ages were not brown. By today's standards, the middle ages were often disgustingly colorful. Poorer people were more limited in the range and vibrancy of their wardrobe, but blues and greens and reds and yellows were all accessible. Only the very poorest had to start with undyed garments.
Can you think of a movie/ tv trope that is a wildly inaccurate representation of what they’re trying to depict? For me, it’s science stuff . They’ll show a scientist and say something like “ he has a ph. D in molecular biology “ and then have him solving physics or organic chemistry problems

We need more electrostates
Electrofficiency: electric tech is far more efficient than the fossil tech it replaces. A heat pump, an EV, an induction hob, same job on a fraction of the energy. That’s why electrification taking centre stage at COP matters. Excellent piece in @theguardian.com www.theguardian.com/environment/...

China went from ~11% electricity in 2000 to nearly 30% in 2024. Fastest in the Global South by far. Indonesia is the other big mover, up nearly 17 percentage points from a low base, while India added a bit over 8 points. More in Bright Spots: janrosenow.substack.com

The electricity-to-gas price ratio is the biggest barrier to electrifying European homes. Heat pumps deliver ~3 units of heat per unit of electricity. The maths works in Sweden but not everywhere. Much of gap is policy. More analysis in my forthcoming Substack newsletter janrosenow.substack.com

i believe that harnessing solar energy is immoral. that energy does not belong to us, it belongs to the sun, and it's going to come back to get it when it consumes the earth in several billion years. don't take what isn't yours. you don't need lights at night if you just remember where everything is
