Pastor, Activist, Theologian. The Gospel is anti-fascist, and so am I. Building a new world through the sanctuary movement, combating Islamophobia, and reparations. https://www.michaelcaseywwoolf.com/
I'm excited to announce my next book - "The Faithful Will Not Comply - A Christian's Guide To an Authoritarian Age" will be coming out in January 2028 with @broadleafbooks.bsky.social. If you ever wondered what faith has to do with our fight for a better world - this is the book for you. From the ❤️.
I’m walking 15 miles today in support of the Haitian community and their push to end unfair treatment and detention as part of a broader pilgrimage from Springfield Ohio to Columbus Ohio. These folks don’t need ankle monitors; they aren’t criminals. They are children of God. They are our neighbors.
The reason why I think this book is so important is because our story is banal - it is replicated thousands of places in the US. We offer this book as a way to cut through some of the pain of white supremacy and find healing - not through ignoring the past but by engaging directly with it.
I am excited to announce my latest book with Michael Nabors - Race, Religion, and Reparations. In 1882, our churches split due to segregated seating. Now we're coming together to do important work in the first city in the US to have a municipal reparations program. bookshop.org/p/books/race...

If you're a mainline Protestant who is interested in protecting free and fair elections this November, I helped put together this webinar that is tomorrow at 1pm Central Time. I'd be super grateful if you registered or shared, as protecting our democracy from a faith-based lens is so important!

In an age of AI, we have a lot of choices to make as the church. Whatever the future of work looks like, we should be wary of any economy that no longer has room for people like Jesus, the workingman of Nazareth.
“For generations of Christians engaged in the social gospel movement aimed at ameliorating poverty, the fact that Jesus was also a laborer was an important connection between God and humanity.”

“If worshipping a God who identifies with the vulnerable makes us more likely to support horrific treatment of immigrants, then something has gone wrong. It seems obvious to me that racial identity is more important in these spaces than the Gospel.”

Here's my write-up about @prri.org's polling data that shows a HUGE number of white Christians in favor of internment camps for undocumented immigrants. We have so much work to do!

"As Christians, we ought to be explicit about how our theology offers a different take on omniscience that drastically diverges from how authoritarians understand it," writes @revdrmichaelwoolf.bsky.socialsojo.net/articles/opi...
Gave an interview this morning for Connect w/ @jacobsoboroff.bsky.social at MSNOW about how the highest form of patriotism is working to redeem your country when it’s going down the path of evil. youtu.be/5lKHypz4DtA?...
As dissent and protests spread, the Trump admin turns to terrorism statutes and online surveillance to target critics.
But @revdrmichaelwoolf.bsky.social
says it's more dangerous to do nothing. "The highest form of patriotism is to want to redeem your country."
Trump came after my city's reparations program, but what he doesn't understand is that the work of reparations is not an attack on America’s ideals; it is an attempt to take those ideals seriously. Thanks to @sojo.net for publishing my thoughts.
"Both viewers of Willow and churchgoers can affirm the central theme offered by the show as articulated by Elora and Kit: 'Love is the most powerful force in the universe.'"

I was grateful to join the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship last week talking about the need for faith based resistance to fascism. It was a great experience! Thanks to @amandatylerbjc.bsky.social for all the work she and BJC are doing!
“There’s something for everybody to do. And I think it’s really important this time as we struggle with fascism ... that we do our best and to live out our faith in the world and find some way to bring our values into the public square as Christians.”
- @revdrmichaelwoolf.bsky.social
My report from the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship general assembly in Florida, with great speakers like @ynpierce.bsky.social, Howard-John Wesley, @amandatylerbjc.bsky.social, @revdrmichaelwoolf.bsky.social, @skyeperryman.bsky.social, & Bacardi Jackson:

Everyone should take a look at this documentary about sanctuary by Theo Rigby. It's really good, and I was so happy to be asked to write a review of it for @sojo.net 👇👇👇👇

And I give my life to these institutions. So, it is personal. The fact that people go to church, hear the message and somehow think it's compatible with concentration camps is beyond disheartening, but it means pastors have to connect it explicitly, even if its unpopular.
Today, I'm thinking about the fact that 50% of mainline Protestants polled by PRRI were OK with undocumented people being sent to internment camps until they can be deported. What a failure of discipleship. It's a shocking number. So much work to do in churches.

Excited to host a coalition of Mainline Protestants today at the church I pastor. We are strategizing for defense of democracy and will be working to resist detention centers/ concentration camps and keep new ones from being built from a faith-based lens.
Let me solve this problem for you. Enforce the law. If ICE comes to a courthouse in violation of Illinois law, arrest them. Let it play out in courts. Who cares if you lose eventually - you still deprive the ICE agents of the ability to terrorize our communities. Have a backbone!

Another D Governor who doesn’t get it. They are on hunger strike in there - it is a torture facility. What would you do if there was a concentration camp nearby? Evidently, you would chastise protesters and send in state police to rough them up. How about doing everything you can to arrest ICE?
Do I sense critique of the ABCUSA in this article by @baptistnews.com? Maybe I'm too hopeful. Certainly Baptist distinctives can be used to create a better world, but the American Baptist Churches has had zero social witness for years, and if you haven't called out this admin by now, you won't ever.
My article for @sojo.net is live about 5 things Christians can do to support Muslims after the Islamic Center of San Diego shooting. For a deeper dive, you can also check out my book, Confronting Islamophobia in the Church.

If I learned anything this past decade, it’s that there are no rules. No one made a rule that you can’t name a building after yourself while you’re president because we thought common decency would prevail. We need all the rules, because courts can’t enforce things there aren’t rules for.

This is what Trump and his cronies are spending their time doing - markups of Trump’s face on a $250 bill. Despite the fact that it’s illegal to have someone living on our money - we are not a monarchy, after all. The level of corruption, greed, and self dealing is unlike anything we’ve ever seen.

He was also the first person to really articulate a politics of consumption. He knew (and told everyone) you can't put sugar in your tea and not be complicit with the horrors of slavery he witnessed in Barbados. Kicked out of his religious community, he never stopped telling the truth.

Don't let anyone ever tell you that "they were men of their times." That's bull. Case in point - Benjamin Lay, the first Quaker to call out slavery in dramatic fashion in the early 18th century, when all the magnates of Philadelphia were pious slaveholders. Tear down their statues and put his up.
