Why are our efforts to mitigate the impacts of #ClimateChange so hard? According the Genevieve Gunther, it’s because too many elites have too much invested in the status quo (and the status quo is a fossil fueled economy). A thread.

<- And yes, fossil-fuel phaseout would help to mitigate global income inequality (no more private jets and white boats, for one thing).”

<- In a decarbonized and electrified net-zero economy—quite aside from avoided costs of worse heat waves, droughts, floods, storms, diseases, and so on—we would be paying much less for electricity, heating, and transportation, currently a huge chunk of people’s monthly bills. ->

<- Healthcare costs would decline too, simply due to the public-health benefits of reducing air pollution. (We should think of high health-insurance prices as a sort of fossil-fuel subsidy.) ->

“The core problem is that the phaseout of fossil fuels would catalyze a serious financial and lifestyle shock to the richest among us. But as a trade-off it would also raise people’s real incomes, making the vast majority of us better off. ->

The El Niño in the Pacific Ocean “will become the strongest, and also easternmost-centered, event on record (if it isn’t already), [making] this year’s tilt in the odds toward wet and stormy conditions in California will be profoundly unsubtle.”

We know that droughts are exacerbated by #ClimateChange, so as far as I’m concerned, this is one more reason to join the effort to reduce and eventually stop heat-trapping air pollution. Get involved. Join 350.org or Third Act or Climate Hope Affiliates or ->

“In Badghis, 95% of the population relies on rain-fed agriculture and livestock to live. But droughts, made more frequent and extreme by climate breakdown, have robbed people of their incomes.

At least we in California are still paying attention to the science. The news about #ClimateChange is grim. The New York Times reports on the latest California Climate Assessment. Summers last 50% longer than they used to. Snowpack disappearing, which means summer water supplies disappearing.

Negative health impacts increasing (right along with the increasing direct financial costs) from more and worse wildfires. Agriculture taking a major hit as heating and cooling cycles certain crops need disappear.

It is time to hold Trump accountable. He must be impeached and removed from office. Do not vote for any Republican running for the US House of Representatives or for the US Senate. Quotes from Dr. Heather Cox Richardson’s October 18, 2026, “Letter from an American.” Read the whole thing. 4/4

There is so many problems that need to be address, so much work to do. Breathe. Relax. Rest. Meditate/pray. Be. Don't just do something; stand there. All of these are acts of resistance, too, and they are life sustaining as well. P.S. Check out the brief thread this skeet comes from for context.

So creating pockets of stillness, slowness, and purposeful inefficiency (at least how the extractive economy would define it) is really a critical thing right now. And having those slow processes also be able to sustain material needs so that there is an alternative to spiral of ever decreasing time

Does it really take twenty heavily armed federal agents to arrest one grandfather in pajamas? The news about the feds arresting 28 people in California for allegedly registering to vote when they aren’t eligible to do so has absolutely nothing to do with arresting these 28 people.

That’s why this post doesn’t have any photo attached. The raids are the message and I don’t want to amplify that anti-democracy message.

(That’s 28 out of 23,000,000 registered voters in California.) It’s all about the message the current administration is trying to communicate—and to set up post-election lies as plausible.

It was a very hot summer in the northern hemisphere. High temperatures are stressful enough on plants and animals (including humans)—heat kills. And it’s more than simply the heat. It impacts water availability, energy systems, transport, whole ecosystems. 1/3

The thing that’s making this El Niño such a monster is #ClimateChange. That’s why our work to reduce and eventually stop heat trapping air pollution is so important. Join the effort! Get involved. 3/4
