****$59 million dollars of OH taxpayer $$***** this doesn't just mandate the centers getting to teach civics but puts ALL civics teaching in the centers' hands

Opinion: Ohio has put $59 million into civics institutes at five public universities. Now a new bill would give their directors “sole and exclusive authority” over civics courses statewide. The author argues this is a new front in curriculum politics. https://chroni.cl/4A7C8PF

Today, my 93 year old grandmother causally told me that this week she’s driving an hour… to have lunch with her 93 year old high school bestie… who herself just got back from a trip to Spain 🤯 #goals is an understatement

A non-econ prof who attended a recent seminar I gave wrote: "The seminar was great! It was my first Econ seminar, and I was expecting a bloodbath with ruthless audience questioning, but it was all quite reasonable." Off to put "All Quite Reasonable" at the top of my CV.

The realization that I’m old enough to have former master’s students publishing JMPs 😳 Endlessly proud of you, @jo-r-king.bsky.social! Great paper!

My job market paper is now online first at EEPA! I examine the impact of a suspension ban on the classification of SWDs, finding that the ban increased classification of more stigmatizing disabilities. doi.org/10.3102/0162...

The autumn view from Amtrak to Maine is gorgeous. I haven't done any public anagramming for a while, so here's your daily dose: FOLIAGE = I GO LEAF

Joshua Goodman@joshua-goodman.com

Taking a very peaceful train north today to visit the @bowdoincollege.bsky.social Economics Dept. Grateful to @riacton.bsky.social for the invitation. Joe Biden was right about Amtrak (among other things). It's so much nicer than flying. More please!

New, from me, a slightly experimental project I've been working on: School Staff Shortages and the Wider Labor Market shortages.paul-bruno.com A sort of dashboard trying to put common conversations about school staff shortages into more context.

Not just a great resource for JMCs, but for those advising students who are considering PhD programs!

Should add that I am also always happy to chat more generally about life at non-PhD-granting, undergrad-focused departments, particularly those that value teaching & research ~equally. They’re not for everyone, but for me, they’ve been an excellent fit!

Great to see this work by by friend & coauthor @julia-turner.bsky.social out in print! Julia is on the job market with an ambitious research agenda, substantial grant funding, and excellent teaching & mentoring experience. Any department that gets the chance to hire her will be SO LUCKY! 🤩

When minimum wage goes up, 2-year college enrollment goes down. Little change in degree receipt though. In the September issue, by Diane Schanzenbach, Julia Turner, and Sarah Turner. zurl.co/Qic3g

The combined undergraduate and graduate student populations of all Ivy League schools is about 140,000 students. The CUNY system alone is 250,000.

Elite universities mea culpas about the “loss of trust” in higher education so often fail to consider the force of the longterm propagandistic attack on universities, given extensive play in conservative media, that long preceded Trump, but which he has massively accelerated.

You don’t gut the country's capacity to measure what's happening in its schools because you care about improving them. Guardian article below.
