I also have a younger daughter, also profoundly deaf, also implanted, and about to start University this autumn. Also through the invaluable support of multiple Special Needs Departments and the NHS. I just chose him because I didn't fancy using a female equivalent of the 'bastard' payoff. 4/3

Since this has blown up I'm going to go full disclosure: My son is indeed profoundly deaf since birth. Connexin-26 the culprit. Thanks to bilateral cochlear implants from the NHS and SEN provision at school (plus his own hard work) he graduated in modern languages three years ago. 1/3

He has now got a really good job, contributing to society through his work and through his taxes. And most importantly, he is fulfilled and happy. Without the NHS and without 13 years of Special Educational Needs provision, those things would have been far less likely. 2/3

The Guardian is doing a poll of the 100 best novels in the English language. Rather than seeing how many I've read, I want to see what's the highest-ranked book I've never heard of. I expect it'll be something in the high 40s. Today is numbers 100-81. So far, number 81, Buddenbrooks <blank look>

If this list of 100 doesn't include Their Brilliant Careers by Ryan O'Neill then the entire exercise is worthless anyway. (I refuse to entertain the notion that Brideshead Revisited, Earthly Powers and pretty much anything by P G Wodehouse don't make the cut)

So the candidate who left school at 16 with no A-Levels and who's spent her whole adult life vocational, manual jobs beat the ivory tower academic turned cushy media pundit, but you can be sure we'll still get plenty more casual description of the latter as "white working class".
