Having done an electronic engineering degree with specialism in audio, I just thought that if things had gone differently I could have been the guy whose job it is to ensure that train announcements are completely unintelligible.

Maybe this sort of thing always happens eventually when organisms start with tool use. Maybe a couple of million years is all you get before inevitably doing something stupid enough to wipe yourself out, and that's why there doesn't seem to be anyone else out there.

The US has deployed its first publicly acknowledged space-based weapon, Air Force Secretary Troy Meink said. Meink said the weapon is already “on orbit” and is intended for “space control” and to defend US forces against “hostile adversary action.”

Just found this screengrab I took of a Family Guy episode a few years back 'cos I wanted to see what the music was briefly shown on the piano... it's the top line of the Family Guy theme song. Now you know.

It sounded like it would be complicated, it is complicated.

I'm the last person to attack climate action but looking at how policy around Net Zero is being implemented - in a bureaucratic fudgestorm of dodgily awarded contracts to corporate blaggers in a desperate search for economic growth - it is only a matter of time before it becomes indefensible.

Thanks to our @rachaelmaskell.bsky.social for signing it also.

Thank you to my MP @chrismurraymp.bsky.social for standing up against new oil and gas, which will only add fuel to the fire of the climate crisis. 🔥 Thanks to all the other MPs and MSPs who signed this pledge as well. Will UK Gov listen? #StopRosebank www.heraldscotland.com/news/2627626...

Sometimes you hear something said which you worry might break the Overton window with the force of its own stupidity.

British people should “enjoy” multiple heatwaves and shrug off warnings of dangerous climate change while enjoying more English fizzy wine, the deputy leader of Reform UK has said. www.ft.com/content/49ea...

This is no surprise. A lot of community energy groups looked into these and they're not usually viable: you can't sell the electricity for enough to pay for the steelwork and digging up the car park. Solar carports solve a bunch of problems but only get valued as one solution: energy generation...

Mike Galsworthy@mikegalsworthy.bsky.social

As Britain swelters through another heatwave, few people will have heard that ministers have quietly dropped plans for solar carports. Cars cooler in summer. Shelter from the rain in winter. Clean electricity all year round. A missed opportunity?

We should be taxing car parking - protecting city centres and discouraging car-based retail. And you could reduce the tax if your car park is covered in solar or trees (public good). This would be a good climate solution.

I absolutely endorse this. York Minster spent something like £2m on a carillon that just sounds horrid. Walked part a while ago and heard someone was just noodling on it! No. No. Wrong. Ick. Get rid.

Church bells should just bong one note - they shouldn't attempt to play tunes. They have very prominent non-harmonic overtones which make any melody a dissonant, unpleasant mess. I'll bet God tuts every time he hears them.

people saying "huh eclipse who cares boring" ... blimey not to be rude but you guys are all dead inside, hollow shells inhabited only by the last joyless fumes of rotted humanity burped out by a dying imagination. but in the nicest possible way.

Every damn website I go on is all "ohh go on download our app for some reason" and I never do, but meanwhile Google Earth, which has worked brilliantly as an application for ~20 years is saying "oh no we're a website now". They can't even be annoying in the same direction.

Please pray to any convenient deities or otherwise emit positive thoughts at the cosmos: our solar farm is getting the sign off test to go live at 8:30am tomorrow! 🤞🤞

This is kind of what TikTok seems like to me.

Odd This Day@oddthisday.bsky.social

It’s the 508th anniversary today of a woman starting to dance spontaneously in the streets of Strasbourg. Soon, she was not alone, and by the middle of August, hundreds of people were dancing uncontrollably in public place, and starting to drop dead 🧵

Seems v plausible that the grid might be teetering in the heat & that the operator might try to keep that quiet. But what doesn't ring true is that anyone legit would take those concerns to shadow equalities minister Coutinho, who famously hallucinated a meal tax. www.theguardian.com/business/202...

Incredible to see the smoke from the Dovestone moorland wildfire creating a brown haze all the way down into Cheshire - just passing Sandbach and I can still see it stretching off into the distance

SO happy to share the news that @ridingsunbeams.bsky.social is working with our friends @ycenergy.bsky.social on a feasibility study that could see the first MW scale solar farm to connect to a mainline AC electrified railway in the UK be led & majority owned by the local community! 😎🤩🚀

RENEWABLES: They're still wildly popular with the British public, not that you'd realise from news coverage * Only 4% are opposed Even for wind/solar farms in your local area, opposition is very low * 74/68% would either be happy to have a local solar/wind farm, or don't care

To those who say: this is a shitty bumpy crappy silty path, and at point you have to cross a bridge with an 8 inch high step, I say: but see how clean and visible the sign is.

The reality is that successive governments have done bugger all in terms of preparing the UK for today's much hotter climate. let alone what's coming Nothing less than a war-footing is going to cut it, and even then future decades are going to be grim www.theguardian.com/education/20...

theguardian.comFailure to plan for rising temperatures has left UK’s schools swelteringMany buildings are in use past their predicted lifespans, but even newer designs lack measures to beat heat

This week is a great time to learn the habit of not boiling more water than you need, if you haven't learnt it already. Don't bring in more heat than you need! Or have a pint of water at 90 degrees heating up your kitchen! (This post is mainly aimed at the people who share our office kitchen.)

The burning of fossil fuels in the past should have been prevented The burning of fossil fuels in the future is still preventable We can stop making the same mistake Help us do that

Put up an external blind ahead of the heat arriving today. Window on the right has been painted with yogurt (not my idea, apparently a suggestion from the University of Loughborough, though could be the agricultural marketing studies dept).

So yeah we got those panels up. You wouldn't believe how long the last little bit is taking.
