My idea files have more in them than I could possibly live long enough to turn into finished work. There's a reason they call it the grind...

the idea phase is the easiest and least valuable part of professional creativity. read the first draft of the first Star Wars if you doubt me Great art is made in the grinding, often miserable collision between the ethereal substance of an idea and the mud and blood and friction of reality

Cary Elwes also broke his toe, while filming The Princess Bride, which is why he both sits down and stands up the way he does in this scene: www.youtube.com/watch?v=niul...

We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting? For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.

I play Hardanger fiddle. It's a difficult instrument. My cats flee the room when I take it out to practice--I'm not exaggerating, they really do. I am unlikely to ever be especially good at it, though I've improved from where I started. But when I have a good practice session, it feels great.

Loving this thread; it's been just long enough since I read the poem that I've forgotten quite a few details. As a theme, this would have made for a more entertaining movie, by my lights.

At this point in the narrative, the message of the poem doesn't seem to me to be "the gods are watching: don't commit atrocities." It seems to be more like "the gods are watching: don't be a fucking jackass." Two very different things, ha ha!

I have been rereading Pride and Prejudice to follow along with the amazing @trungles.com thread and my favorite thing about the Elizabeth/Darcy romance is that it’s not a case of “I can fix him” but more “if he’s worth it, he’ll fix himself”

'i can fix him' no my love you can't. no one ever has

Though I don’t think it’s currently running as an interactive class, the online course HeroesX helped me understand what Aliette is talking about here—not just through Homer but other stories, myths, and poems. The course content is freely available online: continuum.fas.harvard.edu/heroesx/

I studied the history of heroism sometime in my (misspent) youth. The Iliad and odyssey were directed at a very specific warrior class who ruled in Greece back then. Much of what they do was acceptable at the time--but their ideas of heroic are those of a basically alien culture (1/?)

of the dodgy odyssey takes, 'odysseus is meant to be a stoic badass unaffected by war' probably winds me up the most. in the text the king of the phaeacians correctly guesses odysseus is a veteran of the trojan war because he keeps bursting into tears whenever anyone mentions it

We didn't have any collections, but we did have a WaPo subscription which ran Doonesbury (in the editorial section, if memory serves). There was a lot I didn't get, but it did set me up to recognize Ramtha's School of Enlightenment when I randomly drove past it about 15 years later. IOW: fair cop.

Furthering my theory that this entire website is for people who owned Doonesbury collections as children and understood about a third of it.

if you are a trans reader of mine and you struggle to explain to cis family and friends why you hurt so much lately I wrote this so you can send it to them. I feel like we know this pain intimately but I want everyone to understand it, because we are going to need help if it’s ever going to stop.
