I think the factors identified here are important to consider. I also think that Saakashvili catastrophically mishandled 2007, which set off many of the events since and directly caused an opening for Ivanashvili.

Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social

Four factors that have worked against Georgia, among some others: 1. A hyper centralized state; 2. An electoral system that fully gave the entire state to a power elected with a plurality, not a majority; 1/

This isn't to condemn Saakashvili, mind. I think he did more good for the country than bad, but unfortunately his mistakes lined up in a particular way that led to GD (which included centralizing power, which GD has since taken advantage of).

I've said many times that the rise of GD as a response to UNM makes total sense. The problem is that Ivanashvili was able to totally coopt that popular backlash and ride it to power. And now we're here. GD is no longer a popular movement but it doesn't have to be; it's entrenched.

Lula has been reelected president, Brazilian media has now called. An extraordinary comeback for the left-wing politician who trailed by 2 points in round 1 but managed to hold off Flávio Bolsonaro, the former president's son.

I mentioned awhile back that I would move back to the CO-4 come hell of high water despite Boebert or whoever replaces her. Well, I'm in CO-6. I hate it here for a number of reasons (mostly related to living in a metro area), but Jason Crow isn't one of them.

BREAKING: In a stunning moment, Congressman Jason Crow, who sits on the House Armed Services committee, just announced that his number one goal should Democrats retake the House in November, will be to remove Pete Hegseth from his role as the Secretary of Defense.

I want to say up front that I'm thrilled for Serbia. This is a defeat for authoritarianism and a defeat for Russia. It's also _exactly_ why Georgia is about to de facto ban opposition parties: as long as there are contested elections, there's a chance for electoral change.

If there was any slim chance the Constitutional Court in Batumi might have ruled against GD, this just sealed the deal. About the only hopeful silver lining (for Georgia) is that the case doesn't ban new parties from forming. Other factors make that hard, but it isn't impossible.

It's Saturday Phorm time!

*Bruce Buffer noises* It’s time! Time for another episode of I Can’t Believe I’m Putting This In My Mouth (That’s What They Said): The Musical.

This is indeed fun, but it leaves out (to me) an important point: while this method generates infinite triples, it does not generate ALL possible triples (or even all almost-isosceles triples). But it's still fun. There's a deep hole to fall down here.

Today's date is the last Pythagorean Triple date of our lifetime! (Unless you live through 2105) Here's a really cool fact about how to generate infinitely many Pythagorean triples

I will admit that I don't give RFE/RL the same weight I once did. You can feel the shadow of political influence over them as never before. But that doesn't mean this isn't a good backgrounder. It is. If you know little or nothing about the situation, starting here is a good option.

“Georgia’s Constitutional Court is considering a ruling party bid to ban the country’s largest opposition parties, a move critics warn would undermine democratic freedoms and ties with the West…” #TerrorinGeorgia 🇬🇪🇪🇺 #GeorgiaProtests

This bit is especially galling, though otherwise there's not much new here. ANY motion is going to be rejected, form be damned. Putting a different dress on that pig doesn't change that it's a pig.

Thanks Google. What would I do without your AI answers? (Yes, I've switched to Brave for ~97% of my needs, but the Google sports scores for games I don't otherwise care about can be nice.)

God I love that the Avalanche have just taken their (technically) back up goalie’s passion and run with it. And that passion just happens to be SFF books. It’s just perfect.

We had some questions for Dark Matter author Blake Crouch, but he also had some questions for you 🫵

I remember this one. Something to do with wide stances and a certain stall at MSP, right?

Did he think this was a private message or something?

Since this is getting long, discussion of Friday proceedings at the Constitutional Court start here. An interesting day and not in a good way.

Again: no surprises. Actually, that isn't entirely true. No victories for the opposition is more accurate. Three issues argued today: 1) Procedural delay 2) Another recusal request 3) Evidentiary motions

Folks, Wonkette is an institution. I fondly remember the @anamariecox.com days and the current incarnation is just as good and far sharper (and yes, some of the inbetween times were meh). I give when I can. You should too. It probably has a higher return than throwing money at the DNC.

The Montreal Cognitive Assessment is also used to track recovery from certain conditions, but…. Yeah, all that. All of it.

The fact that the president's doctors are giving him the dementia test over and over again -- tracking his decline, most likely -- and that the president keeps bragging about having to take that test should be a five-alarm fire.

fwiw I also don’t believe he can manage serial subtraction, especially if someone is cruel enough to give him sevens, so “acing” is completely out of the question from the start.

You know how it is. In the past, who hasn't had different opinions? Changing our minds is a sign of growth and mental maturity. Are we forever held accountable for considering anarchocapitalism in college? Yesterday was forever ago; why can't the left accept that people change?

Sarah Matthews reacts to JD Vance suddenly claiming he doesn't want to get in the middle of the controversy over Vivek Ramaswamy's vile attack ad against Amy Acton. Funny, because he had no problem defending it yesterday. Roll the tape.
