Its got checklists for the DM to make sure theyre on track, loads of readouts to save your brain from constant improv, lore tips and helpful reminders, and even role playing ideas to keep things fun at the table. Good luck everyone!!!

6. HAVE FUN! This seems like an obvious point, but keeping this in mind makes decisions easier. If it looks like your players are tired of a scene, move it on. If players want to focus on something you didnt expect, let them! Follow the joy in the story and you'll all have a good time.

There's so many tips I could give to new DMs but it all boils down to just giving things a try and not worrying too much about things not going how you planned. And if you are ready for a campaign, how about....

If there's a disagreement, make the call you think is best and look it up later (its ok to be wrong, its better to not get bogged down in rules lawyering, and its ok to learn as you go!) Things can be retconned if need be.

5. Worried about the whole party going down? Adjust the enemies on the fly! None of your players know if the monster theyre fighting has 6HP or 60HP - if something seems too hard during the fight, or too easy, nudge the numbers a little to make things more FUN. Speaking of which....

3. Your players want you to have fun too. If you do make a mistake, just say, and you can figure it out together. Maybe you need to rewind, maybe you just need to handwave a rule- dont sweat it, just be honest. They're not expecting a pro DM, they're expecting a fun few hours with you, their friend.

4. Speaking of rules, dont worry about them too much. If there's someone at your table who is a rules dictionary - consult them! If no one knows, look it up later and keep things moving.

2. Your players have no idea if you mess up. They can't see behind the DM screen, they dont know what you have planned. 9 times out of 10, they will have no idea if the room they just entered was even meant to be there. You can move a lot of things around behind the scenes and they'll never know!

_r_n_w_ 1. Start small. Don't plan a whole campaign, just try running a one-shot. Running something pre-made can give you a feel for the game without too much time investment from you.

That means you can reserve your energy for the improv moments that are sure to come! Looking for good first time DM one-shots? I'll link some below that have been praised for their ease of running and set up.

A little preview of some of the activities at the slop shack in the campaign book! Food, shady NPCs, mini games, betting, spies, and a wild magic raid 😱✨️

I needed to make this graphic for the campaign book to give game masters a clear idea of what the slop shack is like in practical terms - loads of boats to hop across surrounding a central shack that everyone parties at!

The man himself! And the incarcerated version πŸ˜” The player characters visit the slop shack for their first long rest, and there's a possibility that he gets taken away to Stillstone prison during an encounter there. So I made the prison Joe as an extra drawing for the campaign book.

The menu we wrote for the slop shack hasn't changed since 2018, but the graphics have! I made it look like an American style burger joint for the new campaign book.

Some items off the menu even appeared in our stretch goal recipe zine for the 2021 guide! We still make bog broth every winter - its a hearty warming stew πŸ₯°

We published the Traveler's Guide to the Soddenweald in 2021 and made this map as part of it. You can see Gator Joes features on the far left side of the map here!

This was the first iteration of Gator Joes! We made a papercraft version for our 3rd ever Patreon drop. That was 8 years ago now, and tbh it still totally holds up - just needs a lil colour 😊

It's the symbol of Tor, a god who was forcibly put into a magical slumber, his history erased by the colonisers who then settled on the hill that was his shell.

This is loaded with a ton of handouts, illustrations and extras that are all bursting with utility and charm. Love the themes here. Seems like a great fit for a family D&D game but could entertain any table. Quick turnaround on fulfillment too. @rnw.bsky.social has hit this one out of the park.
