Ironic that in the midst of a debate about the dangers of superintelligence the US as we know it faces an existential threat from zero-intelligence.

I was asked by my politically agnostic brother who actively pursues ignorance about current events: as a gay man, would you choose to grow up in the world you did grow up in (1960’s-1980’s America) or in today’s world. Without hesitation, I answered the world I did grow up in. He seemed floored.

When he asked why, I had a one word answer: hope. LGBTQ people may have more rights - on paper - today than we did back then, but we also had a Constitution that we were taught was pretty much ironclad and there was always hope that improvements would come. Today’s world seems a bit hopeless.

Kind of caught by surprise at how today’s SCOTUS decision regarding conversion therapy hit me like a ton of bricks. I’m way past the point of it affecting my life personally, but it makes me so sad for younger LGBTQ folks. And sad that we live in such an uncaring - or outright hostile - country.
