Honoured that Leonard and Hungry Paul has been included in the @irishtimes.com 100 best Irish books of the 21st century (so far), at 38. Thanks so much to the contributors who selected it. (Ps. I was a contributor but didn't nominate or upvote my own book.) www.irishtimes.com/culture/book...

irishtimes.comThe 100 best Irish books of the 21st century: No 50 to No 26A panel of more than 60 experts (authors, critics, academics, festival curators and booksellers) select their favourite Irish novels and short stories of the years 2020-2025

Reminded this morning of a guy I was on a summer job with when at college. We were shoveling muck of some sort and he said, "I'm not doing this. The only muscle I want to use is my brain."

When I die I want a leaf blower named after me so that when people are woken up by it at 7am every morning they can remember me and think, "Rónán would have hated this."

Watched the original 1954 Godzilla movie. The guy who sits beside me in Japanese class told me it's what got him interested in Japan. Thought it was great. Lots of monster movie tropes that perhaps originated in the movie - a strong moral edge to it too. Must watch the other 50 Godzilla movies.

Reminds me to mention my default answer to the question about what am I working on – a novel based on King Kong but told from the Empire State Building's point of view.

Delighted for Harry Kane, can't help imagining what would have happened if he'd stayed at #WatfordFC longer than 6 weeks as a kid though. My money is he'd have been a bricklayer by now.

Dipping into Indeterminate Inflorescence – notes from a poetry class, by Lee Seong-Bok, translated by Anton Hur. Short aphoristic insights about poetry from the Korean poet.

Trying to mix some essays, poetry and philosophy into my reading (what else are bank holidays for). In despair at people outsourcing their thinking to others (including writers), it's refreshing to dip into In Extremis by @jgoldsmith.bsky.social with its open minded, playful intelligence.

"The artistic act has to do with the eliciting of order from significant experience." Thomas Kinsella in an interview with John Heffernan, quoted in Where Love and Imagination Colour the Dark, essays on Thomas Kinsella by Adrienne Levy.

Friends, I am so excited to be in conversation with Moon Zappa about my memoir Home Is Where We Start: Growing Up In The Fallout of The Utopian Dream. Join us 26th October 1-2pm Eastern time, 6-7pm GMT. We’ll be chatting childhood, being the product of a social experiment, announcing exciting news.

As a kid I was fascinated by breathless marathon runners. I asked my dad in the car one day and he explained that if I opened the window and opened my mouth to capture as much air as possible I'd be able to run a marathon when I grew up. Genius way to keep a chatty kid quiet while you're driving

The ability to learn songs on guitar. YouTube has revolutionized that. I used to have to faff around with tab and now there's an abundance of excellent tutorials readily available.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Still buzzing today after a brill evening at the GPO where the shortlists for the Irish Book Awards were revealed! I'm so grateful to everyone who nominated Wild Iris. You can vote for your favourite books (*polite cough* & for Wild Iris, should you be so inclined) here: www.irishbookawards.ie/vote/

In my heart I felt the league was lost in Tallaght but it's still a sickner to hand Shels a win in Dalymount. We just didn't have enough leaders on the pitch tonight. Ah well.

Always a pleasure to chat with my dear friend @davidcollard.bsky.social Here's me talking about money and the business side of publishing and why I've stuck with an independent publisher.

The latest in a series of short exchanges about indie publishing. Rónán shares some startling insider knowledge about the reality of being a writer and the benefits of being with a small press: exactingclamcephalopodcast.com/episode/in-c...

Sorry to hear this. He will be missed. A wild writer. Need more like that.

Sad to hear that Murakami Ryū (the 'other Murakami') has passed away mainichi.jp/english/arti... (Seven of his novels are under review at the CR.)

Congratulations to everyone listed. Hope it brings you new readers and that you enjoy the night out. A good end of term bash after all your hard work and fretting over commas.

My current reading routine to guide me through the narrow path among the briars of 2026: Thomas Kinsella poetry by day. Jon Fosse Septology re-read by evening (tr Damion Searls). A ten minute look at an image from my book of Rothko Color Field paintings before I go to sleep.

This is the best and most essential of literary prizes, recognising and celebrating writers with disabilities. It depends entirely on donations (until some generous partner/sponsor steps up who wants to support such a thing). PLEASE SUPPORT THE BARBIE.

Happy National Apple Day! Speaking of apples, the most brutal Irish curse I’ve ever come across is go ndéana an diabhal dréimire de chnámh do dhroma is é ag piocadh úll i ngairdín Ifrinn. It means “may the Devil make a ladder of your backbone while he picks apples in the garden of Hell.”

I mentioned going to the gym. My son says "you jump around a lot at the gym." "How do you know?" "My friends are always telling me " "How long have they been monitoring me?" "Ah, you've been a meme for ages."
