Wrote a thing warning people to expect a "Twitter Files" redux, of "The Government Files" in which Elon's dumbest fans will make a bunch of blatantly false conspiracy theory claims, he'll find some credulous "reporter" to repeat them, and people will believe it: www.techdirt.com/2025/02/03/t...

Given today’s messaging bill on #TikTok a good time to reup this piece w/ my @dfrlab.bsky.social colleagues assessing #natsec risks, examining the broader digital ecosystem, & highlighting the gaps in tools available to address what most people are actually concerned about dfrlab.org/2024/02/14/t...

Really enjoyed my conversation with @euractiv.com during my trip to Brussels. We discussed the promise and global importance of the #DSA, role of the research community, what to make of the online context with the war between #Israel and #Gaza and more. Thanks Luca for the invitation!

I especially enjoyed the part of this game where the CEO threatened to fire me because I banned someone and then I had to testify in front of congress. 10/10, fun experience, would recommend.

@dfrlab.bsky.social's @laylam.bsky.social joined CNN International to discuss disinformation and graphic content flooding social media from the war in Israel. Layla noted that Telegram's lack of content moderation allows Hamas a pipeline to upload these troubling images that then migrate elsewhere.

My team has been referring to “the panda story” on and off for a week and I’m beyond pleased it’s finally here. If you want to know what “panda diplomacy”, a mine collapse in “inner Mongolia”, and the Memphis Zoo have in common, read on.

Pandas Ya Ya and Le Le became targets of anti-American misinformation that alleged they were intentionally abused. We analyzed the economic incentives and the emotional messaging that drove the spread of misinformation on Chinese platforms.

On today's Lawfare Podcast, @benjaminwittes.bsky.social talks to @rosejackson.bsky.social and @camillefrancois.bsky.social about the Task Force for a Trustworthy Future Web's report "Scaling Trust on the Web," how their understanding of trust & safety has grown and potential future challenges.

lawfaremedia.orgThe Lawfare Podcast: Can We Build a Trustworthy Future Web?What are the challenges to scaling trust and safety to new information ecosystems?

Now’s a great time to start asking these Qs in the context of NEW kinds of data generated by not so new tech. We’re overdue for a convo on what HIPAA SHOULD cover in a digital world where health data & health decisions are increasingly linked. Particularly as politicians politicize our well being

5- @nighatdad.bsky.social speaks to importance of not just saying “civil society” as if it’s a monolith. Being a civil society group in Pakistan is not the same as US. We don’t always engage w/ those most impacted, or prioritize what they flag. Folks not talking about this yrs’ Pakistan elections

4-Sarah Oh speaks to the role civil Society has always played in bringing essential insights to those inside tech companies trying to figure out what and how to build. Now bringing that to her work building a new platform, w/civil society looped in from the start.

1-Considering these sentiments it is no surprise the judge decided as she did. I think we are missing so much that 10 years from now will look as frustratingly short sighted as complaining now about consolidated power of companies like Facebook. Gaming is future tech of our info space.

1- This judge’s sentiment is why we dedicated an entire annex of our new report to the gaming industry. It’s not “just about a video game” https://www.marketwatch.com/story/all-of-this-is-for-a-shooter-videogame-fate-of-microsoft-activision-deal-now-in-judges-hands-dd4416eb?siteid=msnheadlines

3-the downstream effects of fewer companies is under examined as well. Innovation is only possible when new companies solving important problems have people to sell to. Want a trust and safety market? Then you don’t want five companies constituting demand.

2-gaming is currently undergoing a consolidation trend that mirrors that of traditional social media a decade ago. We’re naive if we don’t grapple with the industry seriously. Dismissing it as irrelevant bc “video games” will be at our own peril.

2- as our report details, 3B people play games & the industry will likely be worth $300 B by ‘26. It also builds most of the tech our increasingly participatory internet relies on. China & Saudi Arabia know that. It’s why they have systematically bought up western gaming companies.

My biggest passion is making sure people who care can find other people who care. This report should help you see yourself and your work within a broader jigsaw puzzle, and help you chart new paths to other pieces of the puzzle and the people who hold them. Everyone has a role. What is yours?
