RIP Todd Benzinger, 63. Was a 4th-round pick for #RedSox in 1981 #MLB Draft. Made his debut with the Sox in 1987. Was traded to #Reds in 1988 and won the World Series with them in 1990. Benzinger is the 11th former BOS player to pass away this year.

Another #RedSox front office exec steps up to a bigger role as #Athletics announce Taylor Smith as their new president of baseball operations. Trained in math and stats, the 31-year-old was a Senior VP and Assistant GM for BOS. He came to the Sox after 7 years in the #Rays front office.

#Orioles name one-time #RedSox front office exec Jared Banner as club’s new General Manager. Mike Elias remains club president of baseball operations. Banner was most recently #Cubs Assistant General Manager. Banner began his career in #RedSox baseball operations, rising to VP of player personnel.

All-time #RedSox with a triple and home run in a postseason game: Johnny Damon in 2004 World Series Game 4 at #Cardinals. Kevin Youkilis in 2007 ALCS Game 5 at #Indians. Brock Holt in 2018 ALDS Game 4 at #Yankees (hit for the cycle).

#Guardians (then #Indians) were also in the ALCS on this day in 2007. #RedSox trailed 3-1 in the series that year but won Game 5 on the strength of a terrific start for Josh Beckett, who struck out 11 over 8.0 IP. Kevin Youkilis tripled and homered vs CC Sabathia that night.

Yesterday’s was a miserable anniversary in #RedSox history. Aaron Boone was involved in it 23 years ago. I didn’t even bring it up. Tonight, though, is a far happier anniversary just a year later. And another current baseball manager features in this one. Dave Roberts will always be a hero here.

Short-time #RedSox Seth Martinez has elected free agency. 32-year-old pitched 1.0 innings for BOS this season, finishing the game on August 11 at #BlueJays. Made 42 appearances at Triple-A Worcester (10 starts) with a 5.42 ERA, 1.246 WHIP, and 21 walks to 69 strikeouts.

#RedSox scored 689 runs, fewest since 2014 (634). Breslow on offense next season: "There are a lot of reasons to believe that the existing offense should be better in 2027." Says, "I have no doubt that if Roman Anthony got 600 at-bats we would see a well-above-average offensive performance."

#RedSox Breslow: "While we are frustrated and disappointed and there's a lot of lingering raw emotion about the way this season ended,…I think we can say that we are confident and optimistic about where we're going." Says, "The state of the Boston Red Sox baseball operation is very strong."

On Curtis Mead as everyday second baseman, #RedSox Manager Tracy demurs: "I wouldn't anoint any of that yet." Says, "Pending a healthy offseason where everything progresses well, I would say I wouldn't be speaking out of turn to say we'd be excited to see what that looks like in our lineup."

Of ALWC Series, #RedSox Breslow: "We went to New York and, frankly, we were beaten in every aspect." Says, "When you get beat in the lopsided manner that we did, I think we have to evaluate: how do we improve our offense? How do we particularly improve our offense against elite pitching?"

#RedSox Craig Breslow says Garrett Crochet will "go into the off season fully healthy." Calls Crochet's appearance in ALWC Series Game 2 "vintage" in terms of velo and that Crochet "came out of it on Thursday feeling pretty good.""

#RedSox Breslow won't discuss possibility to extending Adley Rutschman. Says that's between him and Rutschman. Says Rutschman "immediately endeared himself to the pitching staff, to the coaching staff, to the clubhouse." Calls him "a really really high-quality teammate and leader."

#RedSox Manager Tracy: "The biggest thing for me coming into this was maybe dispelling any notion of people thinking that decisions get made prior to the game." Says, "Those decisions are always going to fall on me. I'm the one that has to answer the questions."

#RedSox Manager Chad Tracy: "Do we have data analytics? Of course we do. Everybody does. Is somebody standing there pushing me, saying, 'You need to do this, this, and this?' Absolutely not."

How much does the #RedSox manager follow a front-office script for how players are used in game? Tracy says "None. The decisions are mine." With regard to use of BOS starters in the postseason, "As far as that specific one, my decision obviously didn't go great. That falls on me."

With regard to #RedSox injuries, Breslow: "I'm reluctant to say, 'Hey the solution here is to change what we're doing that has led to career years for so many players.' Unfortunately injuries are a part of our game." Says, "A lot of these seem to be kind of isolated acute events."

#RedSox Breslow on building a 2027 roster: "Our offense was inconsistent. We got on base at a decent clip but we didn't really slug." Says "I think naturally we're going to spend some time thinking about how we improve our offense."

On the possibility of a work stoppage #RedSox CEO Kennedy: "We're moving forward, business as usual, as we get into the rest of [the off-season]." Says, "We'll leave the labor stuff to the commissioner's office but I can assure you that our goal is to build on these two postseason appearances."

#RedSox Breslow: Given a variety of injuries, "I think the fact that we did finish with 87 wins and we did make it to the postseason is a credit to our Major League staff and it's a credit to our players. Ultimately what matters is 87 wins wasn't good enough."
