New article out📑 "The end of economic hegemony? Studying economic ideas in a post-neoliberal world" In the 20th century, debates on economic policy were closely tied to academic economics. From Keynesianism to neoliberalism, economic schools of thought have shaped historical epochs.

tandfonline.comThe end of economics hegemony? studying economic ideas in a post-neoliberal worldSince the 1990s, a particular approach to analysing the political influence of economic ideas has emerged in International Political Economy (IPE)—often labelled ‘the ideational turn’. This approac...

So the climate footprint of the upper class is less about what they buy than about what they own. And therefore about who decides what gets produced. You can cycle to work for the rest of your life without making a dent in a single billionaire’s stock portfolio.

Climate policy focused mainly on individual consumer choices misses the target. If we want to take emissions seriously, we also have to take wealth inequality seriously.

The richest 1% emit around 101 tonnes of CO₂ per person per year. The poorest half emit 1.4 tonnes. This is a very different kind of consumption. Private jets, yachts, the third holiday home. But consumption is the smallest part of the story.

The report also maps the investments of 1,000 billionaires. Together they account for 486 million tonnes CO₂e a year. If they were a country, they would be the world’s 19th largest emitter, just behind Australia.

💯The case for democracy is not that voters are always right, or wise, or good. It's that they can correct their mistakes. That's why it's so dangerous to have billionaires controlling the media or regulating the flow of information. It shuts down the immune system of democracy.

I was having conversations with journalists just a few months ago about whether democracy was doomed. Look at this year: Orban defeated. Vukic defeated. Bolsonaro Jr defeated. Trump heading to likely defeat in midterms. That’s the beauty of democracy. Voters can respond. Don’t count it out yet.

I had the pleasure of joining Joe and Tracy on the great Odd Lots podcast to talk about Europe. The short version: I’m bullish on Europe’s position relative to the US but bearish on trade with China.

The Odyssey is such a traditionally manly movie. Lot's of violence, extremely positive portrayals of patriarchy and heterosexual love - there's even endles discussion of the Sea Peoples. The level of alienation from normie masculinity on the online right is really something to behold.

Total woke cultural victory. We're bringing pronouns back. It is now illegal to be a white male. We're doing May Day parades just for HR ladies.

my crankiest Marxist take is that Bourdieu has a lot to answer for re the total deformation of class analysis over the past decades that has tech bros and mining magnates denounce 'the elites' aka a precarious university worker.

The ECB just hiked into an oil price shock, again. In our new paper for the EP Monetary Dialogue, we argue that this needs to stop. 🧵 If inflation is a function of the energy mix (✅) and the energy mix a function of monetary policy (✅), then even a narrow reading of the ECB’s mandate ... 1/

For years I've tracked billionaire excess. Each year I show students a chart that blows their minds. This year I had to redraw it for a trillionaire: Elon Musk, $1.32T. Depressing that we're here. Silver lining: couldn't have happened to a less deserving person, proof that wealth ≠ merit.

Without energy efficiency, the EU would need — and pay — 31% more for energy today. Since 2000, efficiency has removed 265 Mtoe of demand from the market entirely. The best protection against a price shock is not finding cheaper oil and gas. It's needing less of it.

The obvious answer here is that the student protest movement was broadly smeared as anti-semitic and aligned with terrorists, and a variety of institutions from government, media and the universities acted as if that smear was true, threatening, suspending, expelling and even deporting students.

As President Donald Trump’s unauthorized war on Iran with Israel entered into its second month, some Democratic officials were looking around and wondering: Where are the anti-war protests this time around? And why are college campuses so quiet? @lauren-egan.bsky.social takes a look.
