Sobering findings from @liverpooluni.bsky.social - death rates among 25–49-year-olds in the North of England were 42% higher than in the South in 2024, up from 13% in 1981. We need to understand why these inequalities persist and turn evidence into action. news.liverpool.ac.uk/2026/10/20/d...

An early start at the BBC this morning, discussing reports of a possible plague outbreak in Russia on BBC Breakfast. The circumstances are concerning, but we don’t yet know that this was plague. Rapid diagnosis and investigation are key. #Plague #BBCBreakfast

As well as official engagements, party conferences are a great opportunity for informal discussions on the NHS workforce, clinical research, pandemic preparedness & health security. I’ve known Andy B for years. This was at last year’s Labour Conference. I suspect he’ll be too busy to catchup in 2027

UK mosquitoes can be annoying, but did you realise that they used to carry a form of malaria? 🦟 Human malaria was eliminated here in the early 20th century through a combination of land drainage and mosquito control. 🧪

Looking forward to being in Denmark next week for the ESCMID ESGIB course on CNS infections. Excellent speakers, interesting discussions, and, if we're lucky, some pastries and a little Hans Christian Andersen along the way. Looking forward to seeing many colleagues there.

Smallpox was eradicated in 1980, but its immunisation story began centuries earlier. Lady Mary Wortley Montagu was a remarkable pioneer of smallpox inoculation, whose contribution deserves to be remembered. My article for The Conversation - theconversation.com/lady-mary-wo...

Although you're unlikely to remember having smallpox the disease, your parents or grandparents might recall being vaccinated against it. Thanks to vaccination programmes, smallpox was declared eradicated across the globe by the @who.int in 1980.

100 days into the Bundibugyo outbreak, we are seeing both how far pandemic preparedness has come - and how far there is still to go. The vaccine response has moved at unprecedented speed, but preparedness has to extend across the whole chain. Read more on link below.

100 days into the Bundibugyo emergency, the global health response has moved at a pace unimaginable a decade ago. Yet the outbreak is far from contained. It's painful proof that in a deadly epidemic, even faster than ever is often not fast enough. ➡️ Read more on our website:

The Bundibugyo Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has passed a tragic milestone. Just 11 weeks after it was declared, the outbreak has reached 3,748 confirmed cases, making it the second-largest Ebola outbreak in history and the fastest-growing ever recorded.
