In or close by Sheffield on 7th October? If so, join me as I try to come up with something half-way coherent on the problems & possibilities for UK social policy research on poverty & social security for @sheffielduni.bsky.social Annual Social Policy Lecture www.eventbrite.com/e/annual-soc...
Ahead of tomorrow's budget @changingrealities.bsky.social are calling for Andy Burnham to deliver on his pledge for a 'cost of living' government - and get families living in poverty the urgent help they so desperately need.
www.theguardian.com/business/202...
This morning, Tayyaba & James of Changing Realities shared their letters to the Chancellor on @bbclaurak.bsky.social , ahead of the budget.
We need urgent action on child poverty & support for families who are terrified about the coming winter & need help now.

⁉️How might Burnham’s government effectively rewire the state and move towards meaningful public participation that draws on the expertise that comes from lived experiences?
The brilliant Ella from @changingrealities.bsky.social has some suggestions, drawing on a recent event at No 10 📢
Ella shares her thoughts about past and potentially future work with the UK Government to improve support for families on low incomes using public participation methods:

More newspaper headlines calling for cuts to benefits for sick and disabled young people.
But social security is part of the help and support young people need to get back into earning and learning. The barriers lay elsewhere.
A short 🧵
Last week three Team members gave evidence to the Welsh Affairs Select Committee in Parliament ahead of their upcoming hearings on child poverty in Wales. Drawing on Safety Nets findings they discussed policies and devolved levers in the face of rising child poverty in Wales
As we near the close of this event, we are hearing from Frank Soodeen from @jrf-uk.bsky.social about the moral case for working in a participatory way. Frank reflects on the impact the work on Poverty2Solutions has had on JRF’s own work.
We have had a rapid and inspiring retelling of Poverty2solutions journey over the past decade from Dylan, Ruth & Dan (find out more about our journey at www.poverty2solutions.org
And we have had a chance to start to celebrate the vital work that we have all been doing together over the past decade (all of which is only possible thanks to the funding of @jrf-uk.bsky.social
Already this morning we have heard from Tracey Herrington about the massive difference the merging of expertise makes to policymaking and the importance of the socio-economic duty
@hannahfearn.bsky.social I wanted to reach out about our work with @changingrealities.bsky.social on cost of living crisis. Is there an email I can send some info through to? Do DM it to me if you're happy to, or send to ruth.patrick@glasgow.ac.uk {sorry for cold call}

Here’s hoping this is not the ‘new philosophy of social security’ Burnham trailed in Liverpool.
A generation of young people are being failed by our threadbare public realm. Invest in fixing that and in supporting them.
Axing social security is not the answer
www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
One of these days, I’m going to write something for someone about the ways in which my autistic seven year old is failed daily by the education, health and social care services that are simply not there for him. The trauma he’s faced will have lifelong impacts. Makes me so 😢😡
ofc the pressures that parenting kids struggling with additional needs and/or mental health can push their parents further / away from the paid labour market! So preventative, positive investment in our public services will deliver improved outcomes not just for the young ppl but their parents too.
Andy Burnham wants to run a ‘cost of living government’ – here’s what he can learn from families living through the crisis.
Drawing on @changingrealities.bsky.social, I explore what rising costs look like in everyday life – and what policymakers can learn.

Is the asset means test in Universal Credit really just a benefit rule? Or is it a hidden wealth tax? New research looks at how capital limits can impose very high effective rates of taxation on the savings and inheritances of low-income households.
1/ A slightly strange and lovely thing to be able to say, my book The Social Life of Justice is published tomorrow... www.politybooks.com/bookdetail?b...
This and all day long. These proposals are a click bait distraction from the very real struggles millions are facing as we go into winter with ever rising prices for essential costs & a threadbare social security system l
Families are still paying the price of austerity cuts to our social security safety net. With living costs continuing to rise, these proposals are a fast track to increased poverty and are the last thing people need as they try to get back on their feet.
Super sadly, this swim has been cancelled due to ominous weather forecast ! But @kittyjstewart.bsky.social and I will be back to do it in 2027 and we just hope our kind sponsors will allow us an extra 365 days to complete our challenge 😂
In just more than a week, me & @kittyjstewart.bsky.social are braving Scottish sea temps and jellyfish to swim the 1.3 miles from Holy Island to Lamlash on Arran! Trying to raise a few quid for @hopenothate.org.uk as we do so! Wish us luck www.gofundme.com/f/splashing-...
Three days to this swim which is now such big news it has featured not once but twice on Newscast & includes a mention for my no one supporter, my mum @glasgowoldie.bsky.social
(Not too late to support us all!)

I enjoyed this, and we should all add to what I can imagine would be a very long list. My own addition would be our sense of humour, country pubs & the beauty to be found so often on our doorsteps, including in my own home town of Bradford

Late to share (cos life)
We need to talk more about fact UK still has a Benefit Cap, & one that causes real, lasting harm, while ascribing the thousands of families affected with a power they do not have.

@emann.bsky.social hi Emily! I don’t have a current number or email for you but wanted to get in touch. If you see this and are happy to be in touch will you email me ruth.patrick@glasgow.ac.uk hope things are good x
Not said enough in recent weeks that Bridget Phillipson was the cabinet minister who did the most to secure the abolition of the two-child benefit cap (cited by Starmer as his proudest moment).
Ella and Jonny told Radio 4's WATO what Burnham will have to do if he is to deliver the promised 'breathing space' to families like theirs (listen again from 15 mins in)
Spoiler Alert: The VAT cut is a start, but much (much) more is needed.

Starmer is not the only one moving on today. My youngest has his last day in a mainstream school, before moving onto more specialist provision in the autumn. A big, big day for us all as he says so long but not good bye to friends made at Saltaire Primary
At SPA conference, Baroness Ruth Lister just described surviving the Thatcher years as maintaining “finger in the dyke” politics. I’d like to check the provenance of the phrase but I’m afraid to Google it in a professional setting.
