The gap between the support low-income private tenants can get and market rents in their area has now reached 21%. It's approaching the record gap of 23% when support was last increased in 2024, but the government has given no plans to increase support until 2030.

At SPA conference, Baroness Ruth Lister just described surviving the Thatcher years as maintaining “finger in the dyke” politics. I’d like to check the provenance of the phrase but I’m afraid to Google it in a professional setting.

Local authorities can seek banning orders against the worst landlords, but at the moment this requires at least one (and usually more) criminal convictions. This means they have to start their enforcement all over again when they identify a slum landlord who needs to go.

The legal landscape for enforcing against slum landlords is broken. The Renters Rights Act is pushing local authorities, who hold the powers to enforce against housing offences, to use more civil penalty notices (fines) against slum landlords rather than pursuing criminal prosecutions.

Slum landlords continue to operate in the modern PRS: ● keeping properties with hazards detrimental to tenants' wellbeing, ● engaging in behaviour that is detrimental to tenants' wellbeing, ● repeatedly failing to meet regulatory obligations, and/or ● attempting to prevent effective enforcement.

We have established that the language used to talk about criminal landlords is not fit for purpose. Even the professionals tasked with upholding housing standards can fail to see health hazards like severe damp and mould or unsafe construction as criminal offences.

Ironically, it appears that AI chatbots hallucinate for the same reason that students feel compelled to use them: They were socialized in a high-stakes testing culture that rewards guessing and maybe getting it right over admitting when there's something you just don't know.

How much did this failed experiment in social cleansing cost, we wonder? God forbid they engage in meaningful consultation before titting about like this.

It’s an important and exciting project and the contract duration and scope for independence are rarely seen in the world of fixed term research positions. I don’t know the PI personally but my partner speaks very highly of her.

Gratifying to see a legal view line up with my own instinctive interpretation. @reactiveashley.bsky.social is arguing that the Supreme Court ruling is consistent with implementing a ‘bigots toilet’ and retaining trans-inclusive single-sex facilities.

7/ “We are providing a limited set of “statutory single-sex services” to some cis women because we need to provide a generally available set of “extra-statutory trans-inclusive single-sex service” to all women.” If this is not objectively justifiable, then the law is inconsistent with Article 8.

In the time it’s taken me to write up my research on the impact of voter ID on trans people, the UK has managed to slide from a position of impinging on trans citizenship rights to setting off alarm bells at anti-genocide organisations.

My overall impression is that the EHRC guidance does not make it clear how to deliver trans inclusive services. It is effectively advice on how organisations can exclude trans and gender diverse people from services, which is an unusual approach for a human rights organisation to take.

A single sociologist. Not a medic. Not even an expert in gender and sexuality. A guy whose academic contribution and teaching is on social movements and protest actions, gone entirely off-piste for the sake of bigotry.

Worth noting that bone health was not the key reason for the ban on blockers backed by the Commission on Human Medicine. It was the even less evidenced (=totally fabricated) "impact on gender and sexual development", with an article by Michael Biggs as sole citation.

Our research shows the introduction of photo ID requirements has a deterrent effect on trans* political participation. Last week's Supreme Court ruling underlines how important it is to be alert to the ways in which the UK is making it harder for trans* people to participate in public life.

My presentation can obscure my transness from those who direct hostility and violence towards trans bodies. It gives me a choice about when and how I disclose my gender. Not all my siblings have these choices. Frustration is a privileged emotion, compared with fear.
