Delighted to join the Advisory Board of the @americananthro.bsky.social Interest Group on NGOs and Nonprofits. Looking forward to critical anthropological analysis and discussions on the opportunities/challenges of #nonprofits, #NGOs and #internationaldevelopment in a fractured world. #anthropology
Today, my hope in humanity is restored as the @nobelprize.org for Peace is awarded to Navi Pillay, an international judge of the International Court of Justice "for her efforts to promote peace and international law.β It's life-affirming when right wins over might! Check out my new article on this.
4 years since my close friend #MatthewMather passed away, I still miss his creativity, caring nature and the way he lived life to the fullest. He died way too young, but left an incredible legacy through the sci-fi worlds he created, in the books he wrote. Please check out some these amazing titles!
There is still a long road ahead of us, as battles that were won long ago by feminists like @gloriasteinem.bsky.social, have recently come undone by narrow-minded shortsighted patriarchs & broligarchs. Rest in Power Gloria. We got this. We will finish what you and others started. We shall overcome.
As tributes pour in from all over the world they speak to her ability to listen to people. I met her on her book tour for "Revolution from Within". The book changed my life. She told me I was doing an amazing but difficult thing as a woman engineer, that needed doing, & to keep dong it. I felt seen.
Among a week of unrelenting losses, an icon and feminist trailblazer @gloriasteinem.bsky.social passes away. One of the most influential leaders of the 2nd wave of #feminism. She was radical. An intellectual. An activist. A feminist. A journalist. A writer. An innovator. Unapologetic. Rest in power.
Happy to share my 1st article on Substack on the destruction from the flash flood in Nepal, "Nepal: 'The Perfect' Climate Storm - When flash floods, GLOFs, earthquakes and overdevelopment collide together in the time of the climate emergency". Please check it out and subscribe! #climate #Nepal #GLOF

Excited about our hybrid panel "Is There a Global South Feminist Economics" at @iaffe.bsky.social on July 11th at 9:15 am Cali Columbia time (10:15 am EST) room 104D - with Chipo Hungwe, Jennifer Cohen, Amina Hersi, Alison Vasconez, myself, and inputs from Rachel Noble, Myrah Butt, Anam Perez Butt.
π§΅The idea for the panel grew from the Institute for Economic Justice Summer School on Feminist Economics, where some of us gave lectures while noting the dearth of publications focusing on the concerns of #globalsouth women, men and youth in the field of #feministeconomics and mainstream #economics.
Excited to present a paper on global south and decolonial perspectives on #degrowth at the @pollenetwork.bsky.social conference next week in Barcelona, Spain, on the amazing panel on real existing degrowth (RED) organized by @giorgoskallis.bsky.social and his team. Takes place at 11 am on July 2nd.
π§΅This paper is part of longer research in Bhutan on GNH. It represents collaboration with @oxfamgb.bsky.social, and inputs into the Roadmap for Eradicating Poverty Beyond GDP by @olivierdeschutter.bsky.social and team. Happy to have presented on this with @jasonhickel.bsky.social and @rajpatel.org.
I was sad to learn about the passing away of fellow Tibetan & Buddhist studies colleague and friend Dr Robert A.F. Thurman. I met him when he was giving a lecture in Bhutan. I was touched by his enthusiastic and encouraging words about my anthropological research in the country. Om mani padme hum ππΌ
Heureuse de voir notre article collectif publiΓ©e aujourd'hui sur l'importance d'aller "beyond GDP" dans @theguardian.com et @lemonde.fr, et faire parmi 400 experts global compris @jasonhickel.bsky.social @deschuttero.bsky.social @thomaspiketty.bsky.social @jayatighosh.bsky.social et Joseph Stiglitz.
Excited to see our collective op-ed published today in @theguardian.com @srm-lemonde.bsky.social on moving beyond growth by fellow colleagues @jasonhickel.bsky.social @deschuttero.bsky.social @thomaspiketty.bsky.social @jayatighosh.bsky.social, Joseph Stiglitz & 400 global experts, including myself.
𧡠The Roadmap for Eradicating Poverty beyond GDP (for which I provided 2 contributions), co-developed by more than 400 contributors across academia, the UN, trade unions and civil society, offers 80 concrete policy measures to transform the economy to ensure human and ecological wellbeing by design.
I was happy to provide two inputs into the Roadmap on Eradicating Poverty beyond GDP on: i - global south perspectives on degrowth, and ii - assessing wellbeing metrics for their ability to genuinely move beyond growth. Moving beyond GDP (and growth) is the way. #degrowth #postgrowth #inequality
Excited to see our collective op-ed published today in @theguardian.com @srm-lemonde.bsky.social on moving beyond growth by fellow colleagues @jasonhickel.bsky.social @deschuttero.bsky.social @thomaspiketty.bsky.social @jayatighosh.bsky.social, Joseph Stiglitz & 400 global experts, including myself.
𧡠In the face of deepening inequalities, global ecological disaster and climate emergencies, leading experts agree that economic growth (GDP) has failed to eradicate poverty or to promote wellbeing. They confirm that poverty is not inevitable. Rather, it is manufactured. Yet another way is possible.
My thoughts are with everyone in Bhutan today, as a major 5.6 magnitude earthquake hit Punakha. I hope everyone is safe, and that it did not cause too much trauma or damage. I am thinking of friends, colleagues, neighbors and all sentient beings in Bhutan. Please stay safe. ππΌ #bhutan #earthquake
Following on the short in-memoriam I wrote for my mentor, friend and fellow #anthropologist Joachim Voss for @americananthro.bsky.social, I am honored to share the longer full-length version published by @cas-sca.bsky.social with moving quotes from #anthropologists James Fairhead and Johan Pottier.
As women gather from all over the world in Kathmandu to discuss #pastoralism & #rangelands Iβm happy to share this edited volume published by #ICIMOD in 2016. While a decade has passed, issues of #gender & pastoralism continue to remain at the margins of development. www.academia.edu/9913252/Gend...
My in-memorium for my mentor, friend and fellow-anthropologist, Joachim Voss published today in #Anthropology News of @americananthro.bsky.social. I am grateful to remembrances from James Fairhead and Johan Pottier, part of the same anthropological lineage that includes me, with Joachim at its lead.
π§΅Joachim led a life of impact. He touched the lives of many people in the global south, through his humble championing, support and advancement of their efforts and talents. He showed us how applied anthropology could be done, in making a difference to solve real-world problems of our interlocutors.
Excited to see a fellow #anthropologist win the #PulitzerPrize in non-fiction literature. Can't wait to read this! The rise in homelessness is an urgent topic, especially as it's driven by a heartless, dehumanizing economic system that promotes GDP at-all-costs, and rampant individualism. #degrowth
π§΅/ A broken economic system promotes rampant individualism while eroding kinship and social relations, and our collective sense of responsibility. To counter it, #degrowth sheds light on these issues - and anthropologists tell stories of the unhoused in one of the most richest nations in the world.
May the 4th be with you to protect the pale blue dot we call home. There is no planet B π May we have the wisdom to preserve & conserve all its resources, including all sentient beings we share our planet with. #Climate #adaptation and mitigation are the only way. We have the solutions. Use them! π
@jasonhickel.bsky.social SAPs were a neoliberal project aimed at rolling back of the State (ie social sevices, agricultural extension, etc). They increased womenβs unpaid household, care and farming work burdens in the global south, and exacerbated gendered poverty (income, time) and inequalities.
What is the impact of IMF structural adjustment on social outcomes in the global South? Our analysis in the BMJ Global Health compiles evidence from existing empirical studies with advanced methods. The record is devastating. Buckle up:𧡠gh.bmj.com/content/bmjg...
