IR Book of the Week! "Taming the Careerists" by Minju Kim. When it comes to US foreign policy, we focus a lot on Presidents, top-level diplomats, and the close advisers to both. But US foreign policy is also dramatically (and surprisingly, as Kim shows) influenced by career bureaucrats.

It was a tremendous pleasure having this conversation with James Ker-Lindsay about secession in America.

Could the #UnitedStates break apart? Aside from deep political differences between Red and Blue states, it also has some fascinating separatist movements. It was great to talk about all this with @ryan-griffiths.bsky.social #CalExit #Texit youtu.be/ZmGfSa2gfXQ

Do states make systems, or do systems make states? Michael McCall and I provide an answer in this EJIR article. @mccall.bsky.social

Party like it's 1984! & 1985, 1987, 1989, & 1995! (If you don't get the joke: these are previous years when the US used the Treasury's Exchange Stabilization Fund to bailout Argentina)

This article offers an interesting twist on the analogy between national divorce and marital divorce – an analogy that I critique in The Disunited States. The author argues that where California is concerned, the US Government is guilty of “constructive abandonment.”

A recent Times/Siena survey found that 64% of Americans think the country is too politically divided to solve its problems. Some might think a division into Redland and Blueland is the answer. It's not. I explain why in this book.

A 2023 Axios poll found that 1 in 5 Americans support a “national divorce” between red and blue states. With polarization rising, is secession a real solution or a dangerous illusion that could tear the country apart? See more in “The Disunited States” available now: oxford.ly/4nC1zTC
