Let me introduce myself. I'm a professor @usask.bsky.social at the University of Saskatchewan. My group works on invasive wild pigs, caribou, wolves, and other beasties. I take the responsibility of my academic freedom very seriously and use it and good science to hopefully have some influence.
The why is simple in Saskatchewan. The SaskParty has been in government for close to 20 yrs. They have done so by leveraging their rural con. base vs urban voters. However this base is urbanizing and relatively shrinking. In 2007 67% residents resided in urban Sask. in 2026 82% of SK. is urban.

Thanks to @johnemarriott.bsky.social for reminding me it is Wolf Awareness Week!
I read Never Cry Wolf then later saw the movie and it changed my life.
I study Hudson Bay wolves and it is a great reminder just how amazing they are.

Wolves on the Hudson Bay coast feed frequently on caribou and geese in summer. They are found near trees but are only very rarely actually seen on the caribou calving grounds at Cape Churchill in Wapusk National Park, Manitoba.
On this day in 1904, Tommy Douglas was born. As premier of Saskatchewan, he brought in North America's first single-payer, universal health care program.

i'm no expert, but i assume that First Nations running out of ballots as residents show up in record numbers is probably an indicator of how things are going politically in Alberta.
As Canada awaits the Alberta separation referendum results, let’s remember how stupid this all is. Huge public money spent on a Russian & American-fuelled separation movement for an awfully-written and badly managed unbinding referendum on whether to hold a binding referendum that would be illegal.
Why am I staying up?
1. We pretty much know what the result will be.
2. There will be nothing 'definitive' until tuesday.
3. The results are not even binding.
I naively turned on CBC looking for some reasonable coverage of the referendum but that is a bridge too far for CBC. They keep trotting out loser after loser saying the most trite/inane things, as if Alberta isn't looking like a backwater hillbilly joke that the rest of Canada is laughing at. #sad
Cow and calf caribou always brighten my day.
These are Eastern Migratory Cape Churchill caribou in Wapusk National Park in northern Manitoba on the Hudson Bay coast. This spot is just over 1 km the Bay and they stay close to shore through the post-calving season.
I'm 54 but I'm still up at 11:30pm because:
A) just arrived at an all night rave
B) making home made salsa with my wife who ditched me and went to bed
C) pulling all night study session for my real estate license
I have been diagnosed with "Saskatchewan Burnout" a feeling of lost hope when dealing with a grossly incompetent Saskatchewan government that doesn't care one bit and doesn't care that we know it.
There was proposed national Chronic Wasting Disease strategy developed in 2011 for Canada that was never adopted but could and should be.

A bittersweet day. Today marks the end of an era with the last ever RCAF Snowbirds demo with the CT-114 Tutor ✈
The Tutor has served Canada well and should be celebrated. Thanks to all the pilots and technicians who served with the team 🇨🇦

I've never before called for someone to be fired over the many other bad decisions made by the Saskatchewan provincial government over the years but this time I did explicitly say Darlene Rowden the Minister of Environment needs to be replaced. Cancelling the CWD monitoring program is bullshit.
