“Our labour-stealing tech will go public for billions while we actively promote it by saying it could end the world but no we do still expect everyone else to chase non-existent work right up to the last second of the apocalypse, thanks so much!”

I'm participating in the Oct 28th I'm Not Buying It Protests, not because groceries are too expensive, but because someone thought it would be a good idea to, at the outset of the rainy season, completely tear down and rebuild the one (1) supermarket in easy walking distance of my flat.

Oh, supermarket groceries are too expensive, are they? Tell that to the all the cornershops within spitting distance of me whose prices suddenly and mysteriously jumped the second the the one place that sold frozen pizzas fell on its arse and won't be back on its feet until March.

(This gripe doesn't apply to the Chicken Corner on Paisley Road West, Chicken Corner home of the best sloppy kebab this side of the river, you deserve the best, Chicken Corner, you deserve not to be rubbing shoulders with a building site, I would sell my spleen for you, Chicken Corner.)

Halfway through watching Scarpetta and we don't talk enough about how everything is science fiction now. Oh, you're writing a police procedural? It's sci-fi. You're watching a horror flick? It's sci-fi. That folk-punk band you like? Your toothbrush? The sky? Sci-fi. Everything's science fiction now!

Thinking on stockpiling… I can’t imagine a scenario where I’m looking in the fridge or cupboard for ingredients to make dinner with and even though there’s pasta and tuna in there, I’m gonna say to myself, no, that’s the stockpile, I must go and buy more. My friend, it’s tuna pasta for dinner.

Stockpiling is for people who can afford to buy food and not eat it, for people who don’t decide what they’re eating that night based on what’s going cheap at the supermarket on the way home from work, who have storage options for food they don’t intend to use. It’s so beyond what many of us can do.

We have found it very easy to destroy natural ecosystems which makes it seem like they're extremely fragile. But they are also extremely resilient. Nature bends towards renewal; we just have to get onside

Without commenting on whether LLM feedback is useful (I certainly wouldn't ever ask a chatbot for that kind of feedback), I want to point out that when it comes to improving your writing, getting editorial notes on your work is distinctly inferior to offering criticism of *other* writers' work.

Love it when bus companies are like, surely nobody would be travelling on a stormy night like this, we might as well cancel the last bus and let our lads go home early, we can’t forsee this impacting anyone who, say, might otherwise have to walk 50 minutes in freezing torrential rain; love it!

The cloud of carbon monoxide that hangs over Ibrox during match days from gridlock and idling coaches probably goes some way to explaining why Rangers fans are the way they are.

This is why your festival, venue or event needs a printed programme - if I visit your website to book a thing then I book that thing and leave, if I pick up a programme I'll be looking at it on the bus home and getting excited about what else I can go see that I didn't know about to begin with.

The more I think on this, the more blatant it is? Post-hospital intro, the shape of it is exactly the same right up to the finale - to the extent it’s impossible to even *hint* at how exactly without spoiling one if you’ve seen the other. If I was Playdead studio I’d be feeling mighty litigious.

Also: Personal stockpiles are targets for targeted violence. The government has access to security forces that regular people do not. The advice to build personal stockpiles is therefore a dereliction of duty in the part of the government to protect its people.

George Monbiot@georgemonbiot.bsky.social

Sure, we should, if we can (many cannot). But as I keep pointing out, the government itself is making no provision at all. No stockpiles, no back-up, no alternative sources. It's individuating the response to a collective problem, and that never ends well. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Cynically, I believe that every country thinks if it gets its fossil fuel ducks in a row now, theirs will be the only petrochemical empire to survive what's coming, and perhaps they've all been at this long-term fatalism since maybe the 1870s. They're wrong, of course.

The IPCC is pretty clear that if we want a safe climate there can be no new oil and gas. But every country thinks it has some special reason for why it should be the exception

Today, while redesigning my website to draw in more editing and design work, I've discovered I can talk til the cows come home about what I've *done*, and it's actually quite a lot, but ask me to describe what I *do* and I crumple under the heaviest cringe imaginable.

Tidying junk that's accumulated in my abandoned Squarespace site, came across a story coda I bashed together a few years ago while I was, presumably, losing the plot. Might be useful if you're bored of being jumpscared by The Hero's Journey forever popping up in everything you write.

There's a real sense of vertigo sometimes from reading US tech news. What the fuck do you mean your baby monitors have ads

Yes yes, the reported 80bn net loss of Anthropic is actually good for Anthropic because shares business convertible notes WHATEVER, but have you considered I *want* to point and laugh at these dweebs?

If we stop ridiculing the naked emperor after he puts his clothes back on, we deserve to be ruled by the conmen who tricked him to walk the streets naked.

Good. I’ll feel more secure about this as an example of hopefully one of many significant turning points against GenAI in the arts once a statement goes public via their own channels, but this is the result all our griping aimed towards and I’m glad it’s happened.

The Society of Authors (SoA) has withdrawn from its Ethical AI Charter, launched last week, following backlash and a subsequent statement from CEO Anna Ganley that aimed to clarify the organisation’s position on generative AI. 👇

Just like for years I thought nonce was a general-purpose insult until it was pointed out to me it had a very specific meaning, I've just discovered chud particularly refers to particularly dull right-wing nutjobs. Shame, it's got a great mouthfeel and I would like to apply it more gratuitously.

Never mind playing music on your phone on the bus, what is Burnham doing to stop this one maniac on the back seat of the 90 from cutting his nails?

I’ve also seen in the last few months an increasing number of people surprised and angry that the bus went past their stop without stopping even though they made no effort to flag it down. It’s possible as a society we’re forgetting how to bus.

Vagueposting is insufferable, I know, but the year I've had professionally, if I don't nurture optimism, it isn't going to find me, so, suffice to say, absolutely wild shenanigans afoot chez Vance, and any good vibes you can send, I will appreciate them.

Ah, so America has reached the occult stage of fascism, good for them, it’s one of the more entertaining.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court agrees to review Reconstruction-era ban on distilling spirits in private homes.

It is difficult to understate the harm I wish to befall whoever put on my gym’s playlist the longest, loudest remix of Eric Prydz’s Call on Me. It goes like this: CALL ON MEEEEEEE CALL ON ME CALL ON MEEEEEEE CALL ON ME CALL ON MEEEEEEE CALL ON ME CALL ON MEEEEEEE CALL ON ME CALL ON MEEEEEEE CALL ON

CALL ON MEEEEEEE CALL ON ME CALL ON MEEEEEEE CALL ON ME CALL ON MEEEEEEE CALL ON ME CALL ON MEEEEEEE CALL ON ME CALL ON MEEEEEEE CALL ON ME CALL ON MEEEEEEE CALL ON ME CALL ON MEEEEEEE CALL ON ME CALL ON MEEEEEEE CALL ON ME CALL ON MEEEEEEE CALL ON ME CALL ON MEEEEEEE CALL ON ME And so on.
