We are the unionized workers of the Real You Electrolysis Vancouver branch. Our workforce is nearly entirely trans, and we work to provide gender-affirming care to our trans clientele. We organized in response to increasingly alarming behavior from our management. This is our opinion. 🧵 1/9

On July 17th, the owners of Real You Electrolysis announced the company would be permanently closing on July 24th due to bankruptcy. Our picketing activities will continue until the final day.

This closure does not mean the end of our union, or our fight for justice. We are currently working on plans to launch a worker-owned electrolysis co-op and to transform our union to an industry union within the IWW.

We plan to help organize workers at other businesses engaging in gender-affirming care. Stay tuned for a bigger update!

We're a union of trans workers who provide gender-affirming care to our community, and our management has been ignoring our demands for rights. We set up a GoFundMe to provide relief to our members who have been pushed to a strike. Please consider signal boosting! www.gofundme.com/f/support-re...

It's the first day of Pride! Remember that it wasn't the assimilationist gays that fought back at Stonewall. It was trans and GNC people, homeless queer youth, drag queens. The people still get marginalized today. Help us continue to fight back!! Support trans workers on strike!!

They have explicitly declined to voluntarily recognize our union, in writing, from their lawyer. Thus, we strike. 🧵 8/9

Workers deserve to retain their positions without fear of retribution nor union busting. We stand together in this pursuit and will do so until we are recognized and heard! 🧵 9/9

Our intent is to broker arrangements with our managers to re-hire our three girls who were seemingly unjustly terminated, with back pay, and to secure confidence that more of us will not be let go for spiteful, personal reasons. 🧵 6/9

Thus far, the management at RYE has refused to acknowledge our union despite our official status and federal backing. They have refused to meet with us on any level, instead sending digital notices of resignation, an act that we consider cowardly. 🧵 7/9

We staged a lawfully protected walkout, eleven of us, in response to the third worker being terminated as soon as it happened. It was demanded of us that we leave our keys and it was stated that we were not welcome on the premises following the act. 🧵 4/9

It was later stated that our compliance in returning their physical property was an indication of resignation, despite none of us stating such an intent. 🧵 5/9

The core of our union stems from our coworkers being seemingly fired for petty, personal reasons and under fabricated strikes. Three of our own who had maintained clean records and strong work ethic for over a year's work were targeted for removal by our managers. 🧵 2/9

All three were skilled clinicians and it is out belief that the latter two, who were removed just two days apart, were fired in direct retaliation to their efforts to organize our union. 🧵 3/9

You are up to date.
