The largest, most technologically advanced companies in the world NEED quality content to feed their machines. They have also explicitly said they'd like to crush IP laws. And, given what I've just said about Amazon. Do you think big 5 publishers are going to come out on top?

Not the main point here, BUT, I have said before that many of these prestige prizes are steeped in whiteness and are Western-centric. A celebration of mostly white men, if you will.

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

I won’t waste my time listening to this, I’ve seen his views on LinkedIn (since blocked). Classic white man who learns nothing as he progresses through life and is certain he is right. That’s me being polite.

The chief executive of High Line Publishing and former managing director of Hodder & Stoughton Oliver Malcolm appeared on the TRIGGERnometry podcast on 17th October, where he spoke on the number of women working in publishing, DEI efforts, and monoculturalism in the industry, among other topics. 👇

Just found out somebody is using my name to approach authors. This is MOST DEFINITELY NOT ME. Please be extremely cautious in general about the emails you receive and double check that you’re speaking to the right person. I assume this is some bullshit that AI has facilitated.

It’s exactly these wishy-washy views in AI that will seal our demise. From the LRB nonetheless.

‘Sudowrite, the “best AI for novel writing”, promises to maintain your ‘unique voice’. Whether or not you have a unique voice, it will give you scene directions and alternative options for the plot, and act as your editor.’ Alfred Nunney on AI and books, from the blog. www.lrb.co.uk/blog/2026/oc...

If you were ever in doubt whether authors hold any power, just look at how much coverage Sally Rooney has had, this happens every time. Pretty damn effective activism, I’d say.

Book clubs? Reading groups (online and in person)? Marathon readings as fund raisers? If these don't involve the sale of the banned Rooney novels no laws would be broken, at least not yet.

So, Sally Rooney/Faber isn’t allowed to sell her books in the UK, but I assume her books can be read publicly? Maybe something festivals should incorporate this into their programs?

Indeed, and the working assumption must be that any AI detection system is unreliable, unless it is a time-machine to go back in time and watch you produce the work. Lie detectors don't work either as their inventor said,

Whole thread a must-read for book folk. 👇👇

Happy distribution! This week we're paying over £12million to over 30,000 writers 🙌🍂 We hope this autumn payment can make a bit of difference to our members - are you saving or spending yours?

The BBC's new director general has described a 50-minute AI-generated episode of Doctor Who as "pretty good," and suggested that the technology now enabled the creation of content "at the standard of a Hollywood studio." https://bit.ly/4rD8rmh

Might be a good time for @thebookseller.com to revisit this and see if anything has changed? (This if from 2017)

Truly astonishing that institutions like Cornell University are covering for rapists and getting away with it for 2 years. In my mind, it is a violent and dangerous place and no young women should consider going there. As well as the men, Cornell should 💯 be held accountable.

That post doesn’t express what monsters I think those men are for what they did. A SEVEN hour attack!!!! Worth considering that I’m sure that young women (in her lucid moments) thought they were going to kill her. And honestly there are no limits to the consequences I think the men deserve.

It is very disturbing to read how OpenAI coached the Tumbler Ridge school shooter in planning mass murder. Tech companies need to be held accountable for their design "flaws."

DoorDash has ripped off more than 260,000 NYC delivery workers. We’re making them pay $131.5 million — the largest worker settlement in City history. This is New York, where hard work pays and greed will cost you.

I would say this is unbelievable, and yet

A HMRC official was sacked because he was caught on camera saying he gives wrong information to black and brown people when they call for advice in a bid to sabotage them. He was a member of the far right group Patriotic Alternative. How many more?

Fucko demon sloppers 🤣 🎯

Jeff VanderMeer@jeffvandermeer.bsky.social

There's a site that offers a suite of ai modules "write like authors" x, y, z, including me, and let me tell you that is the devil's work. And also I don't write like me book to book, so good luck with that, fucko demon sloppers.

On this Labor Day, let us remember that it wasn’t the CEOs and billionaires who saved us during COVID-19. It was the janitors, nurses, cleaning crews, grocery and food workers with their hard, often invisible labor.

Seems that most of this bullying happened a Orion, so I refuse to believe they don’t know who the bullies are. Fire them. A working group 🙄

The Bookseller@thebookseller.com

The Hachette UK leadership board has consulted with external consultants and created a working group to follow up concerns flagged in The Bookseller’s bullying investigation. 👇

During this time the man read an article about another man who had also ‘discovered’ a mathematical solution using ChatGpt, so man one he fed article into ChatGpt and asked it about it. ChatGpt said - That’s uncomfortably similar, but he’s nuts and nothing like what we’re doing.
