Troops in the streets is not a distraction. It's something that was widely planned, discussed, and part of Trump's 2.0 agenda. It's a major component of the authoritarian project to suppress critics and advance Trump's agenda.

Dear Democrats: Please stop with the talking point that somehow the militarization of blue cities is a "distraction" from something something. It's kind of the main thing right now. Downplaying it as a "distraction" minimizes the crisis and dodges responsibility for doing anything about it.

As a reminder: Trump’s first act was to pardon HUNDREDS of J6 rioters who assaulted and beat DC police officers. Trump’s been responsible for a large percentage of the total assaults (and many of the worst/most brutal) on DC police in the last decade.

BTW, I don’t blame the writer. This is 100% the fault of the *editor*. Part of being an editor (and I was one) is working with writers so that if they are—say in journalistic writing—accidentally burying ledes, they get out of the habit. The NYT’s editors have been asleep at the switch for years.

The Epstein scandal will soon disappear. Ghislaine Maxwell will totally exonerate Trump (by lying of course) and Trump will give her a pardon. I can just imagine the press conferences.

He was the wrong person for the job, and did not understand the moment he was in or the adversary he was facing—and was attempting to appeal to principles that didn't apply to the situation and maintain norms that the situation had already broken. He would've been competent in another era.

Americans overwhelmingly opposed this. He did it because he wants to send a signal to far-right domestic extremists all over the country that he will soon call on them to again commit violence to keep him in power—and if they do so well enough, they will face no consequences. The message is clear.
