What do you dream of your local streets being like? For me it is making them welcoming public spaces for everyone to enjoy and move in without fear from traffic (including the remaining vehicles which are there). I drew this of my local South Road, Sheffield.

Tell me it's a terrible decision without telling me it's a terrible decision

Why approve the Jackdaw gas field? 🔥 It makes no sense economically or environmentally, and it will do nothing for the cost of living crisis or energy security. Our Richard Sulley has written a reaction to today's news about Jackdaw. Read it here ➡️ sheffield.ac.uk/grantham-cen...

Labour approving more fossil gas at Jackdaw is a violent act, helping no one but Shell. Miatta Fahnbulleh defending this by saying it fits within UK net zero targets only confirms how feeble those are. ✨Not expanding✨ oil and gas is the absolute least govt can do, and they won’t do even that.

Is Burnahm’s line that Jackdaw will “help keep millions of homes warm” a bit like me saying turning on my tap in Sheffield “will help empty millions of litres from British reservoirs”? Seems like Orwell’s political language designed “to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind”

You may want to try turning this off. I say try, as when I went to do it the “on” toggle wouldn’t change.

eBay users! Don't ignore today's email, even though it looks like a boring standard update to the User Privacy Notice. They want to use your data to train AI models. If you click the link over the words "the right to object", it takes you to a page with a toggle button letting you opt out.

We had our street’s first Playing Out session today. Turns out, yes there are other kids here. And neighbours meeting. And after it officially ended, my two were flipping crocs into the air and wouldn’t come in until it was dark and Strictly time. So. So. Good. @playing out.bsky.social

Considering arguing that for a safe road system we need to rethink responsibility to the point of decriminalising bad driving: Drivers aren’t the enemy, so the police can’t save us.

Lisbon has finally decided to reallocate road space to favour pedestrians on the famous Rua Garrett. It’s much better. All it takes is a bit of paint and some bollards to start to get the life back into a street again.

“These choices were made for you. But you were never part of them” We can make better choices about our streets, because most of us never chose the way they are now.

Few people put it as clearly this. “The public needs to be able to make the decisions as to who gets what.”

For me, it comes down to this: when compounding crises threaten our water supply, do we want corporations and billionaires in control of it?

Thank you Rachel. Such courage and dignity in the face of awful framing from BBC.

Very nice to hear a sane voice from Piddington. Serious respect to this woman, who is apparently already being othered by more bigoted villagers.

“Every aviation scenario the UK Government has published overshoots the carbon budget Parliament has legislated, before a third runway at Heathrow is even taken into account.” (And even that budget is wildly out of line with 1.5 or 2C)

Kevin Anderson@kevinclimate.bsky.social

The CCC @thecccuk.bsky.social offers Heathrow a thumbs up, conditional on the massive deployment of “snake oil” technologies (SAF & GGR). Report by Tyndall researchers, building on UK Govt commitments, science & maths, reaches a very different conclusion. See: climateuncensored.com/heathrow-exp...

Hillsborough Corner, one of Sheffield’s more complex junctions, has all signals out today. It can be difficult for people crossing, esp if you’re blind, but in some ways the traffic has really calmed down with drivers giving way (including to people) and checking if they can risk going through.

Incredible improvements but note how the 'red' colour denotes UK legal limits aligned to health evidence from 2005 The health evidence was updated in 2021 by WHO. Applying the latest evidence to these maps, only first block is blue (10ug/m3) We've a long way to go until we breathe *healthy* air 😷

Pollution levels in London after 10 years of advancing sustainable transport.

What if the difference between “actual” safety and “perceived”safety is how well your measures of “actual” safety describe the “actual” real world?

Our streets and roads have been prioritised for motor traffic at every level for so long it is hard to notice that it is even a choice. Great post here about unravelling that strangling net.

Like rebuilding a crashed aircraft (irony etc), returning from climate overshoot, if possible at all, would be vastly more expensive and difficult than preventing it. Healing will always be needed. But stopping the injuries makes that easier.

Dr. Aaron Thierry@thierryaaron.bsky.social

You know what happens when a plane 'overshoots' a runway. It doesn't just 'return'.

In Wales 20mph has prevented injuries for people inside vehicles even more than for people outside them. It’s not about benefiting either “group” at anyone else’s expense. It’s safer for everyone.

“Removing people from the public realm of our streets by ensconcing them in private vehicles traveling at high speeds on… public space that has been designed for their domination results in social severance: one cannot encounter others, engage in human interaction, or foster trust…” 🔥

Why is it so difficult to fight automobility? Aren't sustainability and health benefits reason enough to shift our mobility away from cars? Ashton Rohmer argues that peace and conflict studies can help us answer those questions. Read more in Ashton's Substack article: buff.ly/irMjL5H

Does capturing cattle waste to digest and produce electricity and fertiliser make a significant impact on the climate impact of dairy? It seems methane from the waste is only 10-25% of the methane produced by cows - most is burps and so would continue?

Wonder if Home Office is making a similar booklet for far-right race rioters since they seem to have an actual tendency towards abuse? www.thedetail.tv/articles/alm...

Once again we see people who have fled war and persecution treated as if they are criminals from the outset. Not only the booklet, but the reporting on it, reinforces far right narratives against people seeking asylum by treating asylum seekers as "foreign criminals". www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

There are some MPs who understand that drilling for yet more oil is wrong. I’m glad my MP Abtisam Mohamed (Labour) has signed this. Yet the list of names is so, so short.
