Native to the Australian mainland and Tasmania, the Tawny Frogmouth’s main defense is to freeze and blend into tree bark, relying on their disguise rather than fighting. They are closely related to nightjars and potoos. 🤭 IG: @ivan.carter

Not sure people understand how bad El Niño already is. In Southern California today, we had an offshore pacific hurricane (not normal) take out homes and beaches. We had temperatures topping 111°F with high humidity. There's a fire in LA. And we are just getting started with El Niño.

This shows the days per year with marginal heat stress in orange, and coral bleaching heat stress in red in the Florida Keys. Both the intensity and longevity of heat stress per summer is increasing.

The waters around #Florida are heating, especially fast in the Florida Keys. In the past 4 decades summer water temps have increased from comfortably below the “bleaching threshold” in the mid 80s (blue), to near/above 90 (red) in recent years - a deadly temperature for coral if it’s persistent 1/

I don’t think people realize how big an area is experiencing its hottest water temps ever recorded. 90% of the W. #Mediterranean and ~3/4ths of the nearby E. Atlantic are experiencing record warm sea surface temps (in magenta) This simply does not happen without human-caused climate change 1/

#CO₂ may be changing more than our climate—it may be changing us. A striking study finds rising atmospheric CO₂ parallels shifts in human blood chemistry, including ↑ bicarbonate and ↓ calcium & phosphorus. A worrying signal? www.sciencedaily.com/releases/202... 🧪 #ClimateChange #HumanHealth

Watch as the East Pacific Morphs into a Monster El Niño - the strongest ever observed! This shows how surface and subsurface temperatures have heated dramatically since (relative to) last fall. The heat travels there under the surface from an overheated West Pacific Warm Pool… 1/

We are on the verge of a climatic upheaval greater than any of us can imagine. Global leaders and media aren't paying attention. They are focused on a series of self-inflicted crises that have left us dangerously vulnerable and totally unprepared. My latest. charlieangus.substack.com/p/what-keeps...

Any politician who says we couldn't avoid coming climate disasters but voted for £millions in oil & gas subsidies is lying "This week the temperatures in Nino 3.4 are the warmest ever recorded for early august and almost the most above the average for any day of the year." via Dan Satterfield

Earth is now warming faster than at any point in recorded geological history - around 10 times faster than the extreme warming event 56 million years ago and 20 times faster than at the end of the last ice age. We are almost certainly in a new extinction event.
