Earth is now warming faster than at any point in recorded geological history - around 10 times faster than the extreme warming event 56 million years ago and 20 times faster than at the end of the last ice age. We are almost certainly in a new extinction event.

With the way things are moving forward currently it looks as if humans may be on the top of said extinction list. At this point it's a question of what's going to die first: the planet or our society? Both seem to be in their death throughs.

Society almost certainly first, then some centuries or millennia later the last human. Humans may be incredibly adaptable, but are also large, metabolically active apex predators that require lots of calories to survive. Once every meaningful food source goes kaput, there's not much else we can do.

If you look at the previous six mass extinctions, what's the common theme in all of them? The apex predators completely, utterly die out in every single one. Humans are the GLOBAL apex predator. We rely on a far more fragile house of cards than we'd ever like to admit.

If we, the non-billionaire, pro-sustainability majority would simply leverage temporary violence on those who are literally killing everyone and everything we could at least address the problem. So human greed and human fear/reluctance are equal parts to blame.

I agree. Considerable thought needs to be placed into the “day after” and the consequences that follow but in this particular case how much time is left to resolve this another way? 20 years? Maybe 50? Less than 1 full lifetime? What world are children born today going to live in as adults?

Yes, it is. Collapse of the Thwaites shelf this year. Then, acceleration of land deglaciation, ocean level rise, albedo loop effects. Then, isostatic rebound (deglaciation moves trillions of tons across the shelves), and tectonic plate rift volcanism. Then, the toxic gases. 6th mass extinction.

Agree. Rift volcanism doesn't create eruption events - it just opens up and low viscous rivers start pouring out (usually for thousands of years). It's basaltic, so a lot of H2S, HCI, HF, Halogens too. It was a primary kill mechanism in 3 mass extinctions. Not good for aerobic mammals.

Worst case scenario will likely be a black swan event that almost no one forecasts or expects. Humans being humans it will likely be war or pandemic event fuelled by famine and mass migration.

These documentaries should be shown for free annually, like 'The Wizard of Oz'. Seriously. I thought I understood climate change until I watched both of these.

I hope it's just us humans that experience extinction so that the rest of Earth's species can experience a garden of Eden planet without us here continually fucking it up!

Even if we stopped all emissions today (and of course we’re not), we are still guaranteed to pass 2° within the next decade and 3° (maybe even 3.5°) long, long before 2100. We must greatly reduce emissions ASAP, begin massive carbon capture endeavors AND find a safe geoengineering method.

I think this decade was kinda the endgame for a massive change we didn't get it i think we're just kinda done right? at least barring a miracle of scalable energy efficient carbon capture lol

I agree, but I believe that IF we were able to develop, test and implement a safe geoengineering method (combined with massive emissions reductions and massive carbon capture) in the next 5 to 10 years, there would still be hope. Do I think ANY of those three things will happen? No. 😓

We have been in an extinction event, aptly named Anthropocene extinction. Yet, the last two people alive will still argue whether climate change is real NASA isn’t giving up on mars because it’s dead, it giving up because we will never leave this planet before we self destruct. Crazy, huh?

??? The current ice age is still in effect and has been running for 2.1 million years. What you're experiencing is called an interglacial warming period that began 18,000 years ago. And will last for about as long. Pollution has sped up the natural clock but it didn't start the warming... Cont,

Even if you cleaned up the planet today, the heat is not going to go away. It will have to be dealt with and people will have to move. Both because of the heat and the rising oceans. You've still got a few years before it gets 'bad". Your great grandkids will have their hands full...

Global warming can intensify the effects of El Niño – periods of drought and dryness, as well as heatwaves- and we are entering a weather crisis. This El Nino will likely break the all-time record for intensity! apnews.com/article/el-n...

apnews.comUN, scientists warn that strong El Nino will add fuel to 'a planet already on fire'The United Nations warns that a strengthening El Nino is intensifying global weather extremes and is adding fuel to a planet that it says is already on fire.

Permian: 252 million years ago, mass extinctions, temp rose 8 degrees over 60k years Triassic: 201 million years ago, mass extinctions, temp rose 4 degrees over 10k years Paleocene period: 56 million years ago, mass extinctions, temp rose 5 degrees over 5k years And we're the vertical red line🙄

Probably it will rather drive the creation of new species that are fitter. Humans will be relegated to the polar caps and the temperate zones dominated by the successors of rats. Or cockroaches. Just let us hope they do not develop Intelligence.

Once we start getting land temps of 50c plus, we’re pretty much fucked as a race and reading a lot of research, past the point of no return especially with countries as big as USA doing very little to prevent it, in fact making it worse. China seems a bit more inative now but still another culprit 😞

When you ask americans to try to cut down a tiny little 1% of emissions nobody can be arsed and then you get told off for 'shaming' whatever.. I hope it goes quickly and that we dont take out every single species with us, but I have doubts

I live in the uk and we are quite near to the arctic circle; we’ve had no rain for months and have had a string of heatwaves in that period! I have never experienced this before to this extent. Our homes aren’t built for temperatures above 30C. It’s unbearable inside. It’s getting worse each year!

Definitely we’re going to like USA soon having AC installed which is fine on new builds, everything is hidden in the walls and ceilings, but not so good on older brick built properties. Stone and brick for a few days can be cooler but after a while acts like bricks in a storage heater.

Just to add a caveat; the north of the British Isles is a lot cooler, but even they have reached their fare share of thresholds to be classed as heatwaves. Thankfully they have had rain of late; the south had had jack…!

I'm sad about wildlife suffering & going extinct because of humans. If leaders cannot see climate refugees in their own countries & unwilling to turn things around (if it's at all possible) then they don't deserve to be leaders.

Too bad it’s not an asteroid I’d much prefer the quick death Instead we’re all going to bear witness to just how evil people can become when everything is a life or death situation Like All’s quite on the Western Front Is it better to die at the beginning Or live through the Hell n die anyway

Yes and it started 50 years ago or more. The last time the Earth had a mass extinction of the scale we're in RIGHT NOW it took biodiversity 6 million years to recover. Stephen Hawking was right. Humanity is doomed due to greed and stupidity.

That's right, doesn't care. My cousin in NC lives right near a lake that feeds their ground water/tap water system. Yrs ago it was revealed that a local plant was illegally polluting the water & cancer rates sored. Cousin said "It's not my prob, it's my kids/grand prob for I wont be around."

I just don't think that's true. Our lives might *get* worse due to the impacts of climate change and general ecocide, but it's not a serious argument to suggest that standards of living haven't improved since the start of the industrial revolution

I didn’t want to appear hyperbolic, it’s difficult to post about how extreme things are / could get without sounding hyperbolic, especially in the current climate of social media.

Don’t worry folks… the billionaires driving us all off the fucking cliff all have their bunkers now. In about 30 years, we will be living in the Soylent Green dystopian hellscape.

We deserve it like that, as we have the most stupid persons in charge who just think about their profit but not about the future for all humans. So better, we all vanish from this planet and give it 180.000 years to recover with new life forms, hopefully not an art so stupid like the Homo Sapiens.

Meanwhile in central Alberta rain and coldest summer that I can remember in 70 years. Winter was one of the coldest and a lot of snow. Ice age is coming again for the 4 th time over earth’s history . Earth started off as molten rock and there has been many climate changes from hot to cold a lot

We are experiencing a global "extinction event", losing many species. But this language fails to acknowledge our agency + ability to work towards the best of our possible futures. This includes grieving loss, creating collaborations, taking small-to-large actions, and rooting in climate reality.

Turns out that while humans were arguing if it was real, molecules of CO2 didn't care the slighest about any of that. They just went on doing what they do; absorbing infrared heat energy, and they are really good at it.

IIRC we were supposed to be on the cusp of a new ice age, so a little warming might have been just the thing to keep things stable. Instead we have created a new heat age that will last thousands of years. I don’t think people understand that it’s never going to get colder again.

Im pretty sure if there is ice at the poles were technically in an ice age but we shifted the cycle i can't remember i haven't doomed out to climate things in few years 😅

The part that really sucks is that Earth is still really cold compared to its historical average. I recall that during the Jurassic, average Earth temperature was something like 140F. Humans aren't built for Earth's long term average temps.

I just re-read the Ishmael series. I am getting ready to re-read: EndGame by Derrick Jensen Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight - Tom Hartmann An Inconveniet Truth - Gore Forecast - Stephan Faris Collapse - Jared Diamond The Long Emergency - Kunstler The Unihabitable Earth - Wallace-Wells

The much scarier comparison is the one 250 million years ago, we're pumping carbon into the atmosphere faster than the End-Permian extinction and that saw a rather extreme 10°C above the pre-industral average humans have experienced.

The difference is the P-Tr happened over tens of thousands of years with repeated pulses of intense warming and then also intense cooling that sterilised the planet over and over and over again and led to extreme ocean anoxia/eunixia. This is "just" going to be a single, historically extreme pulse.

That's not to say it can't end up being as severe as the P-Tr where nearly everything dies out, if e.g. things really go to shit and we end up with >10°C warming and the collapse of every ice sheet on Earth within just a few thousand years, then you could start talking about it being that bad.

But perhaps the point being missed here is even a K-Pg level event still represents the demise of the majority of extant life on the planet, and certainly an event that isn't survivable for humanity. An escalation to P-Tr territory just ensures almost no extant species survive.

How incredibly sad!! So many world leaders (including ours) have ignored or denied the problem. And all of us are paying the price as well as our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Those asshole leaders will not be around to suffer the consequences but our families will!😥😓😡😡😡

During Covid CO2 levels dropped because people weren't going anywhere not in cars..not in Planes ..so that proved Humanity is responsible for all of this..Remote work has helped but ever so slightly..not enough to make a dent..we must stop driving Gas Cars..these Data Centers horrible for the Earth

Lets study how early humans used their money and texhnology to survive the last climate crisis. Maybe it would help us survive the next one?

Can someone pls give me the source if this data shown here so that I can ram it down climate deniers’ throats! But I suspect that even id they are given a source they’d say it was not reliable or ‘agenda’ driven.::!!

and this year will likely be off the chart... (over 1.5) Human kind extinction is needed if earth want to survive. I don't understand people who does put little human on this earth. #Nihilist #Pessimist #ProbablyBoth
