In a lot of cases I would use fonts for text like this, but I decided to handwrite these because honestly, it's just easier to make it fit and flow with the art. There's very little wiggle room. (I actually had to do it twice, this was mixed case originally sob)

This is why I encourage other comics people to really look at the deadline they've been assigned and if it's even feasible. And not "it will kill me, but I can do it" feasible, either. Sometimes deadlines are arbitrary and can be adjusted! Especially early in the process! Ask for what you need!

Hank Green@hankgreen.bsky.social

Weird Story real quick… A year ago my friend Bria and I released a cute little app that installs an easily distractible bean on your phone. If you use your phone less the bean can knit more and then you can trade in the stuff they knit for decor for their house. SINCE THEN............

Working on my handwriting font. Got samples of all of the letters and vast majority of the symbols prepped, ready to begin tracing. I scanned them at 600dpi, so each square of graph paper is 150px. Slight fuzziness when loaded into Fontlab, but that should be fine since I'm tracing manually.

Brandon points out one of the most vital skills for a manga letterer. Retouching art is something to approach in steps. Fully white out the JP text and isolate that area. Get the broad strokes like boundaries out of the way before doing any detail work.

Brandon Bovia@brandonbovia.bsky.social

Here's a look at how I handle some of these big sweeping crowd shots. If you look at the English SFX laid over the art before I retouch it, you see a lot of gaps where I need to fill in the crowds. Clone tool makes quick work of these, but it's important to establish the borders (highlighted red)—

—and things like the signs people are holding up. In blue you can see all the spots where I filled things in. The illusion holds up pretty well, but I tried to pay attention to things like rotation/angle of the crowd in different parts of the arena.

Look I don’t think voting alone fixes everything. No one action will. But it‘s one of many tools and I think we‘re doing ourselves a disservice not to use *every* tool available. Please make a plan to vote early or vote Nov 3rd and take a few minutes to read up on your local races and issues.

Fantastic bit here. Brendon said he considered using a handwriting-style font for this page until he saw this line. The hand-written text does get replicated across panels, but as exact copies that get transformed, not re-written.

Dark Horse as a manga publisher doesn't have hard rules about subtitling vs. replacing signage, so there's a mix of methods. I appreciate the stylization for the subtitles on items that would be prohibitively difficult to replace. It's a dense manga, and Brendon told me it was arduous to work on.

Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken volume 8 is out in English now, and my friend Brendon @lettererbrendo.bsky.social lettered it. Oowara-sensei has a cool style that utilizes lots of digital assets, but is still full of lines and text drawn by hand. Here are some panel comparisons that stood out to me.

CEO’s so badly want their companies to operate like a tech company, but nearly every single tech company functions not to build a sustainable business but to hopefully get bought by a larger tech company.

The value of your business is in your employees, and replacing them with AI is like replacing the bricks in your home with cards

The goal is of course to replace entry-level jobs with AI, but I have to ask: 1) what do you think happens to an industry with no entry-level workers 2) what is the point of a publisher that doesn’t sell books

Going to make and release a new font by the end of 2026. Putting this out there so I have some solid motivation. Not gonna be a font specific to comics, just my default rough handwriting. It's messy. But I've learned a ton since my prior font, and need to kick into gear to implement all that.
