Short thread asking @nytimes.com and other MSM to stop interviewing the same small handful of people every time something math-related comes up. Mathematicians are dismayed when AI scoops them on the results? How about look for advice from someone familiar with getting scooped and outpowered.

Terence Tao is typically described as one of the world’s greatest living mathematicians. He is on the front lines of a debate about artificial intelligence and the future of his field.

'That $1 trillion could have been used for anything... Instead, it has been channeled into constructing energy-draining, water-absorbing data centers that power large language models (LLMs) built on the theft of millions of people’s creative work, which consistently produce incorrect responses...'

We assume that the AI boom is the result of market demand. In reality, it is the result of investment decisions made by concentrated capital, which is reshaping the economy on its own terms.

Congratulations! At long last and so well-deserved! Hope to see much more excellent work along these lines from you in the future!

Defended my PhD in computational linguistics! Huge thanks to @schtepf.bsky.social, @michamahlberg.bsky.social, @anastasiaglawion.bsky.social & @paulari.bsky.social, and to my colleagues from DHSS and Computational Corpus Linguistics for the Doktorhut with a working CQL query.

Has anyone tried asking ChatGPT about Artemis 2? As I keep saying, the singularity of human civilisation is close if we don't stop buying into all the AI hype. (The real problem is not the lack of up-to-date information but that it's virtually impossible to talk GPT out of its false beliefs.)

This corroborates my worries: AI coding agents are glorified as fully autonomous programmers, probably with superhuman skills, but in the real world they just mess up good code.

Honestly, AI slop PRs are becoming increasingly draining and demoralizing for #Godot maintainers. If you want to help, more funding so we can pay more maintainers to deal with the slop (on top of everything we do already) is the only viable solution I can think of: fund.godotengine.org

Today, I appointed Mila Oiva (University of Turku, Finland) to a Professorship in Digital Humanities at FAU, focusing on images and objects. She studies audiovisual heritage, especially historical newsreels (e.g., Soviet Novosti Dnya and Estonian newsreels). Welcome to FAU, Mila.

AI are breaking the internet desparately crawling data. Excellent quote on deeper reasons: “People are using these tools to replace knowledge and gaining skills. There's no reason to assume that this attack against our cultural sense of thrift will not continue.“ www.theregister.com/2025/08/21/a...

Probably not a good strategy to post this late at night, but I'm very happy that updated slides and complete R notebooks for my ICAME46 and CL2025 talks on Bootstrapping Keywords and Collocations are finally available on OSF. Share and enjoy! osf.io/x82cz/ @cl2025.co.uk #ICAME46

@andrea.nini.com forensic linguist at the University of Manchester, and alum of Aston University speaks with Nicci and me about his evidence that the British teenager who had alleged rape, did not author a retraction statement even though it was written in her own handwriting.

Now that I finally caught a flight to BHX I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s #RC21 workshop at #cl2025. In addition to these two contributions, I will also be talking about bootstrapping, multivariate analysis, legal tech, and comparative discourse studies!

We're much looking forward to a busy #cl2025 for #RC21: workshop on Sunday and presentation on Thursday! (Let's skip the riots, though)
